Bass Guitar

Levels Taught:
Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
This is my best instrument as a teacher and performer. You can expect instruction in three areas--theory, technique, and repertoire, or put more simply, ideas, skills, and songs. I will teach you a skill, we will discuss why and how it works, and then I will show you how to use it in the context of a song. This process can take place over a few months or a few minutes, depending on what's being discussed and the experience level of the student. I will almost always send you home with reference sheets and/or recordings. Though we sometimes learn out of books, I prefer to generate custom lessons and materials and focus on playing by ear.

Teaching since:
January 2010

I'm a Detroit-based multi-instrumentalist with experience playing gospel, jazz, R&B, rock, and more. I studied jazz bass at University of Michigan, but I am certainly down-to-earth and open to teaching a variety of musical styles at many different levels. I've played bass, keys, and guitar in a number of groups over the years, and I've studied these instruments privately with amazing mentors since I was young. Because of this experience I can help a student find and fine-tune their role in their band no matter what the instrument. I can also help those students who play music privately in their own homes or with their friends to create and attain musical goals.

More than anything, I appreciate the friendships I form with my students. There is tremendous trust formed in the teacher-student relationship as we work toward shared goals, and that is something very special to me. Essentially, music takes on an apprenticeship model. Interested beginners find an experienced mentor, gain knowledge and experience, and in turn become experienced musicians who can mentor students themselves. I've celebrated achievements with my students as they begin to perform, write and record original music, and pass auditions for groups and music schools. I derive so much pride and responsibility from carrying on my musical lineage, and I strive to help students follow their interests and become accomplished musicians in their own right.

In June 2018 I was invited to play at Community Christian Fellowship, and after the service I was offered a permanent position there. Various Churches

I play bass for churches, often as a contractor rather than faculty, in the Detroit area. Sometimes I'm hired to play services for a number of weeks or months, and sometimes I'm hired for special events. This work is in gospel and CCM styles.

Dec 2006 - Present

I began performing when I was a teenager. Although I started with house shows, private parties, local events, and academic competitions, this career became semi-professional when I was in college. It was tough to balance being a serious music student with a number of weekly performances in Ann Arbor and Detroit, but it was invaluable to match my studies with experience.

I've had the opportunity to play in famous venues, like Baker's Keyboard lounge and the Michigan Theater. I've played, recorded and traveled with a number of musicians and groups, including recording for Vulfpeck's Antwaun Stanley in 2015. In addition to playing with local groups, I contract for private events, like weddings, reunions, recitals, and parties. I have contracted as a bass player for musical theater productions. I have contracted and performed for the University of Michigan a number of times.

Much of my playing experience since moving to Detroit in 2015 has been in the gospel circuit. I've played at a number of churches and events as a musician and music director on bass, piano, organ, and occasionally guitar.

Lifetime Student

of great Music and Musicians

I began learning music at a young age, and my desire to learn and do more as a musician has been growing ever since. My journey began with guitar lessons at the age of eight, but I've expanded my study to bass (upright and electric), voice, music production, piano, organ, synthesizers, and turntablism.

I learned directly from some of the greatest musical figures of my lifetime, including Bob Hurst, Geri Allen, and Danger Mouse, and I have attended master classes and Q&A's with Jeff "Tain" Watts, Ron Carter, and Esperanza Spalding.

I'm currently mentored and taught by some of Detroit's finest musicians. They are passing down the legacy Detroit's musical legacy--Motown, rock, hip-hop, gospel, techno, jazz--by gigging with and training young musicians like me.

Finally, I practice endlessly. On top of performing, recording, rehearsing, teaching, and--of course--listening to music, I practice and learn music for an average of 8 and a half hours a day, six days a week. Although my students usually don't have the time to practice that a professional musician does, I try my best to make their path easier by having the deepest breadth of knowledge I can.
