About Joelle L.
Hello! I'm a professional vocalist in NYC and excited to be expanding my private teaching studio. I’m a resident artist with Lincoln Center Education, have been featured on NPR, released two albums, am a session singer, songwriter & band leader, singing at NYC’s top venues: Birdland, Tavern on The Green, The Rainbow Room, The Plaza, Rockwood, etc. I'm a grad of Boston University where I received a Bach. of Music in Vocal Performance.
Whether you’re already a professional, prepping for a Broadway or TV audition or recording project -- a budding professional -- just want to sing your heart out at karaoke & in the shower -- are an adult that grew up a musician and wants to get back into it and have a creative outlet -- or a talented child that wants to develop their skills.
I specialize in jazz, pop, musical theatre. My knowledge of rep in these genres are vast, so after hearing their voice, I can assign songs that I think are fitting. I also give listening homework, and teach basic theory if that's of interest.
My approach to teaching voice first starts with listening to your goals as a singer. I then personalize your lessons to reach those goals, using tools from the vocal toolbox as I call it -- which includes physical alignment, breathing, vocal placement, relaxation techniques -- as well as repertoire guidance! I tailor vocal exercises to the individual student, aiming to strengthen and focus tone, improve control and release tongue and jaw tension.
I also act as a supportive mentor working with singers to prep for auditions or performances. I give techniques to get over nerves, and help students emotionally connect to the music while improving body language and connection to the breath. If you want to work on basic theory, songwriting, or improv - we can also do that. I believe improving vocally can be a joyful experience!
