    About Joe H.

With 20 years in the music business as a Songwriter, Lead Guitarist, Singer Songwriter, and Performer, I have been teaching Guitar, Bass, and Songwriting for over 10 years. I bring my expertise to the table, sharing what I've learned about getting great on your instrument, and how to make-it and survive in the business, if that is your chosen path. Appearing on over 30 internationally released CD's, and performing an average 75 shows annually, I am an example of what you can do with your talent if you are willing to practice and believe in yourself... and have FUN doing it! My formal musical and business education includes several years of private piano lessons and guitar instruction, and 30 years of practical learning and professional applied experience that makes me a chosen player among my industry peers. I studied Music Publishing at UCLA and am a registered Publisher with ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publisher) and worked in Film & TV Music for CBS Studios and Paramount Pictures in Hollywood for 15 years. *** Lesson Details *** My lessons are always fun and informative, easy going and packed with cool RIFFS! Whether it's Rock, Blues, Acoustic, Punk, Pop, Rockabilly or whatever we are working on, you will walk away from each lesson feeling inspired and that you "can truly do this!" We explore chord vocabulary, with emphasis on the basic shapes and recurring patterns that the greats have employed throughout Rock n Roll's 60 years of rebellion! Leads, rhythm, working mainly on songs you want to learn, and other tid-bits that will nurture the direction you want to go in with your instrument. I use work sheets that we formulate during each lesson, and sometimes refer to Mel Bay books, which are very good for beginners. I encourage ear training and challenge students to listen with an open mind to recordings and use their imagination to decipher what the musicians on the recording are playing. Ear training is always FUN! As an established and successful Songwriter, I enjoy exploring song structure and composition, encouraging students to bring their own creative ideas in for fun and development, if desired. I encourage artistry and "out-of-the-box" thinking in my students, helping them to discover their own unique "voice" and personality on their instrument. Use of new technology is always encouraged as well. I encourage students to trade licks with other musicians, to explore the great lessons on YouTube, and to always stay open-minded about musical styles and tastes. *** Travel Equipment *** Student should definitely provide Wifi for my laptop, or your own Computer with internet access. We are certainly going to use it. Other items that may be helpful are a printer, CD Player, 2 guitar amps and cables (for electric lessons), and a quiet space for us to work. *** Specialties *** I specialize in both electric and acoustic guitar. A strong focus on chord vocabulary, rhythm guitar chops, lead playing and song construction. My specialties are Singer/Songwriter, Blues, Classic Rock, Rockabilly, Psychobilly, Punk, Nu-Rock, Folk. Beginner and Intermediate levels. Often refer to Mel Bay's books and rely heavily on the internet for Streaming music and content, tailored to each student's specific needs and interests.
