Music has been an integral part of my life for as long as I can remember. In the evenings after listening to my mother teach piano lessons to a studio full of students, I would climb into her lap and beg her to teach me to play the piano. I eagerly soaked up everything that she taught me, enthralled by this incredible language of music.

I continued studying piano with my mom all the way through high school, adding much-anticipated voice lessons in high school as well. We came from such a small town that we had to travel two hours round trip for my weekly voice lessons.

As an undergraduate student at Willamette University in Oregon, I launched into further piano and voice studies earning a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance. I began teaching seriously in the spring of 2009 as a member of NATS, and continued as an adjunct faculty voice instructor at Willamette University for two years. I also played piano for the Opera Workshop class as we prepared for two full length operatic productions: Our Town by Ned Rorem, and Hansel and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck.

I have since completed a Master of Music in Voice Performance at The Boston Conservatory where I specialized in Vocal Pedagogy and Classical Vocal Performance, and continue teaching private voice and piano lessons in Cambridge to students of all ages.

I seek to create a nurturing, encouraging and appropriately challenging environment for my students. I want to help each student deepen their curiosity and love for music while simultaneously empowering and equipping them with skills to achieve their musical goals.

I started taking lessons with Joannah after a 10-year hiatus from playing the piano. Joannah made me feel right back at home behind the keys! She took the time to understand my goals and my musical preferences and combined the two to put together an exciting yet reasonable lesson plan for me each week. She was also flexible with my busy work schedule, and had no problem changing or canceling a lesson if something came up. I highly recommend Joannah as a musical instructor for folks of all ages--she is wonderful!

I've only just started taking lessons with Johannah yet she's been able to help me explore my voice and part with some bad habits. She is all about using the whole body to produce a free and healthy sound. She is energetic, non-judgmental and encouraging. I look forward to continuing to learn from her.

I stumbled into lessons with Joannah after spotting a flyer in Porter Square, shortly after I had moved to the area, and it was the best act of random chance ever! I haven't had singing lessons in well over a decade but I still thought I knew what to expect. Not so. Joannah's lessons are very different to anything I've experienced before and yet my voice sounds the best it ever has. She has an arsenal of strange and wonderful exercises that I enjoy doing as much as the actual songs, with each one designed to work on and improve a specific part of the vocal machine. It's a whole-body experience, and I have to say, I've never enjoyed arpeggios more than when sung from on top a bouncy purple yoga ball!

I take my lessons for fun and pleasure, both of which Joannah provides in spades, but also for the satisfaction of seeing a continuous improvement in something I enjoy. The beautiful (and hitherto unsuspected) tone, colour, and range of expression that Joannah has been able to pull out of me over the last few months really does impress me. Along with her warm, bright personality, Joannah is a true technician who really knows and understands her craft. I feel very lucky to have found her.

I was a beginner when I started working with Joannah. She met me at my level and crafted lessons that were just challenging enough to gently push me outside of my comfort zone; I progressed quickly as a result. She encouraged me to “be brave” when singing. Her encouragement coupled with her infinite patience created a safe space for me to learn.

Joannah is a gifted instructor. Time with her is well spent.

Joannah has been a wonderful teacher for my seven year old daughter. She is enthusiastic, patient, and full of ideas to make the lessons fun and informative. My daughter's playing has come along nicely. She worked with me through a bumpy patch (as can be the case with new young students) to keep my daughter involved and enthusiastic and now she really looks forward to her lesson each week. I'm very pleased and would recommend Joannah to anyone!

I am happy to recommend Joannah as a voice teacher. At the urging some years ago of my two daughters (then in their teens), I started singing in my church choir. I had not sung in a choir since my teenage years. At some point one of my daughters noted that I was straining to reach certain notes and wondered if I was using the proper voice techniques. I knew nothing about such things, but, serendipitously, I had come to know Joannah, who had just begun offering private voice lessons, so I signed up. In just six or eight lessons one summer, she taught me how to stand, how to breathe, and myriad other singing techniques I had never known about. She was a joy to work with, and those few weeks greatly enhanced my pleasure in singing. I heartily recommend her.

Really talented voice instructor

Over the past few months, I have really enjoyed my lessons with Joannah. She has lots of positive energy as an instructor, and is very skilled at creating a calm, non-judgmental atmosphere to experiment with the voice. She knows a lot about human anatomy and brings that into her suggestions for how to create a natural and beautiful sound.

Unlike other teachers I've had, Joannah doesn't play by some mysterious one-size-fits-all voice playbook -- she really listens to each individual's voice, explores how it works, and crafts singing exercises suited to it alone.

It helps that she herself is a young musician, embedded in the local arts scene. I love the music I'm working on and I would really recommend her to anybody looking for an awesome voice instructor.
