About Jessica B.

Welcome to Takelessons.com! My name is Jessica and I am classically trained professional violinist and violist with over 20 years of playing experience, currently based in Saint Louis, Missouri. Music has been passion of mine since a very young age, so it was inevitable that it would end up being my career. Naturally, a love for teaching the wonders of music followed suit!

I've been teaching violin and viola professionally for over 12 years now am always encouraging my students to go above and beyond. My experience includes teaching private and group lessons at my private studio, students' homes, as well as at various music schools, summer camps and festivals. Advanced students have been awarded spots in All-State competitions, summer festivals and Talent Scholarships for college as well as admission at highly competitive Conservatories.

I started my music studies at the age of 7. Lessons and orchestra were literally the highlight of my childhood. I ended up attending the Baltimore School for the Arts for high school where I was names a Maryland Distinguished Scholar of Music, and went on to receive my Bachelor of Music Performance degree from Shenandoah University and complete further studies in England, Northern Ireland and graduate studies in Maryland. After graduating, I focused on performing with various orchestras in the Maryland, Virginia, and DC area, as well as managing and performing in a professional string quartet until I decided to teach full time.

I am also a registered Suzuki Violin/Viola teacher and have attended many teachers workshops in order to gain the knowledge and experience necessary to work with any and all types of students, including those with learning disabilities, such as ADD and FAS.

While I am a registered Suzuki violin teacher, I do not teach solely out of a certain method or "by the book"; I choose and mold every lesson depending on specific, strengths, weaknesses, etc. If you are a more advanced, serious player, more intensive lessons and repertoire will follow suit.

I am comfortable teaching all ages and levels up to advanced. Use of games make learning the violin fun and accessible for young children. Older and more advanced students receive a more technical, intensive and advanced approach. Coaching and weekly help on school assigned materials (orchestra/string class music and homework) Classical, Jazz, Gypsy and Fiddle styles are all introduced and studied to give students a rounded technique. Music theory (reading and understanding music) is incorporated in lessons. Repertoire is diverse and exciting. Various approaches for the visual or aural learner. Guaranteed to keep you or your child engaged and interested!

**New Studio students:**
-If you are coming to my home for lessons, please be sure to bring your instrument, shoulder rest and any books you may already have.
-You may park on the cul-de-sac next to the house and walk down.
I have a trial 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 size violin to use for the first lesson if your child is a beginner.
-After the first lesson I will send an email explaining what materials and equipment I recommend you buy to help you sound your best.
-Places to rent or buy instruments will be recommended upon request.

*** Cancellation/Reschedule Requests ***
1) At least 24 hours notice is required if you need to cancel your, or your child's, lesson. You will be given the option to take a credit that will automatically roll over to cover future unpaid lessons on your calendar, or the option to reschedule for a different day within a week of the canceled lesson.

2) If you find that you need to cancel with less than 24 hours notice you will be given the option to make up your lesson within 7 calendar days of your originally scheduled lesson time. If you cannot do a makeup lesson, this will result in the lesson being marked as "missed" and will still be charged as if you attended the lesson.

3) If you do not show up to your lesson scheduled at my home studio and no notice was given, the lesson will be marked as "missed" and will still be charged as if you attended the lesson.

4) If I need to reschedule or cancel a lesson for whatever reason, you will be given an option for a makeup lesson or given a credit that will automatically roll over to cover future unpaid lessons.

5) I require two weeks notice to discontinue lessons if you would like to receive a refund or be exempt from paying future tuition.

6) All lessons are billed ahead of schedule and must be paid in advance in order to keep your lesson slot.

Jessica was my daughter’s violin teacher before she moved. We looked for a year to find a new teacher but weren’t satisfied. We were delighted to find Jessica on takelessons. She picked up right we’re she left off and it was wonderful.

Jessica has been a great instructor for this adult novice student. Jessica keeps the instructions interesting and challenging and adapts to the pace and preferences of the student while building foundations for this beginner. She is patient and made great adjustments on the fly. She understands limitations and assigned exercises that matched my gaps and progress to meet me where I am in the learning process.

Jessica is an awesome instructor! She made me feel comfortable and completely at ease.
I’ve never even attempted to play before our lesson, and by the end we were practicing playing each string. I’m very excited about our future lessons!

My daughter has been studying with Jessica for over a year now and it has been a great experience. From day one Jessica has worked on strengthening fundamentals and tailoring her instruction to my daughters specific needs; and most importantly, in a positive and thoughtful way.

Ms. Jessica is just awesome! She understands students, sets high expectations, and gives students what they need to meet those expectations. My 6yr old daughter looks forward to her violin lesson every week and feels inclined to practice during the week. I wholly attribute my daughter's attitude and outlook toward the violin to Ms. Jessica's teaching!

Jessica has been teaching our daughter for the past year and has been an outstanding violin teacher. The lessons are age appropriate and she connects well with our daughter. She has a fun reward system with stickers, which works perfectly for young students.I would recommend her without hesitation. We hope to find someone equally good in our new location.

I grew up in a musical house, play multiple instruments, and have had my fair share of music teachers. Jessica is far and away one of the best instructors I have seen. She is always focused, energetic and targeted, delivering the content my 8-year old needs in the format she easily understands and gets excited about. I heartily recommend Jessica for anyone considering a teacher and would not accept any other substitutes. She is top notch.

My daughter age 13 has been playing violin in the school's orchestra. I did not see much progress until we signed her up for lesson about 2 years ago. My daughter has been working well with Jessica. She has her good days and bad days about making a commitment to practice. I have seen some progress she is playing 1st violin at school and has actually started practicing the music on her own. She has her good days and bad days about practicing. Jessica has encouraged her a lot she seems to understand my daughters point of view on music and I value Jessica's opinion.

Jessica started teaching my son in Feb 2014, just after he turned 5. He told me that he wanted to play an instrument and chose the violin, so we went online and found Jessica here and on the Suzuki website. Her experience and reviews really stood out and I can tell you from our personal experience that every word is true. She is the most patient, kind, fun, engaging, and positive teacher you could ask for for your child. And on top of it all, she is an excellent violinist herself who really understands music and how to explain it.

My son has come a really long way and he is very proud to be able to play the violin! He is not always the easiest to work with, (some days his favorite word is 'no'!) but she really encourages him when he gets frustrated and I know she is a big part of why he has come so far.

One of the things I love about Jessica is her ability to adapt seamlessly to the needs of her students. She is flexible and able to adjust what she does to take advantage of her students' strengths and gradually improve their weaknesses and doesn't just stick to one way of teaching. She is also incredibly accessible if you have questions or need guidance and always stays in touch, even with her busy schedule.

After a few months of my son taking lessons, we even decided to hire her for an extra half hour so that I could get formal instruction too. I am 39 and never seriously played an instrument before (1 year of elementary school clarinet, notwithstanding) yet she can go right from teaching my 5 yr old to working with me without missing a beat. I feel like she brings out the best in her students and I see concrete improvement in my own skills and understanding every week and can't believe how far I have come in only a few months with her.

So bottom line is whether you are 5 or 50 and no matter your experience level, if you are looking for a violin teacher, I highly recommend hiring Jessica immediately

Couldn't have asked for more!

We found Jessica through the Suzuki Association Directory. I was looking for a teacher that taught through the Suzuki method and she ended up being a perfect fit for my VERY energetic son. Patient, flexible (lessons in our home), laidback and even willing to drop by on her free time to fix a few broken strings and stray bridges
We could definitely hear my sons progress after each lesson...very pleased and would definitely recommend!!! :-)

AWESOME teacher

my daughter was a first time learner with the violin and was lucky enough to get Jessica at a local school she was teaching at. My daughter learned sooooooo much and sooooo quickly that we were devasted when we found out that she would be moving back to Baltimore... We loved her so much that we have her on a lesson by lesson basis when she is in town around our area :) She is reliable, affordable and made the lesson a blast for my 6 year old... you will be lucky to get her expertise :)

Works great w/young kids

My little one of 9 has a bad attention span and Jessica is very patient with him. She uses games and such to keep him interested; he loves the Monkey game! He recently played at the studio recital and did so well. I'm sooo proud of my little one.

p.s. thanks for rescheduling lessons Ms. Jessica :)
