    Find your voice!

My approach to teaching voice is grounded in the breath, body awareness, and psychological well being. One must be continuously mastering the air as the body may feel different from day to day or week to week. The journey in an instrument, as personal as the voice, is never easy. Therefore, I encourage positive self-talk in and outside of lessons. I will always ask students how the exercises feel, but also what they're thinking about when executing them. In addition, I listen for any physical tensions a student may display. My goal in teaching is to help the student rid the body and throat of any extra tension, so they can produce the freest and healthiest sounds possible. I consider my job well-done, if a student no longer needs me regularly and can become their own teacher. For younger students, a big part of my curriculum is reading music and rhythm fluently, and learning different types of musicality based on the repertoire choices of the student. I also have experience teaching voice to students with special needs.

    About Jessica B.

A prolific teacher of all ages and abilities, I strive to give my students the foundation they need to grow as a musician. My teaching philosophy for whomever wants to learn, is to give them the healthiest and most efficient way of using their voice. No matter the style, singing is always about vocal freedom, and freedom to communicate a piece of music in a meaningful way. Because singing is so integrated with our physical well-being and emotions, I constantly encourage my students to have positive self-talk during lessons, practice, and performance, and always inquire as to how they are feeling before starting a lesson. I do this in order to help tailor the lesson around not only their musical needs, but also their physical and emotional needs. I take pride in constantly being an advocate for my students and find it of the utmost importance to always show compassion in an art form so vulnerable and personal. Many of my students have made accomplishments such as being cast in their school musicals as leading roles, hired for auditioned or semi-professional choirs, received musical internships, and more. As an active performer myself, I made my Carnegie Hall debut this '21-'22 season, and am both a Resident Artist at Sparrow Live and a Young Artist with Dell'Arte Opera Ensemble in New York City. I've also made appearances this season with the Boston Festival of New Jewish Music and NEMPAC Opera. Past performance credits include singing or covering leading roles with the Vienna Summer Music Festival, Hartford Opera Theater, Opera Fusion, and more.
