- Levels Taught:
- Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
As a professional brass musician, I have been teaching brass instruments for over twelve years.
For the beginner level, I have introduced many students to their first instrument ensuring that fundamentals are in place. At the intermediate level, I have helped many students advance in competitions and seat assignments within their band program. As a collegiate educator, I have given masterclasses at universities and private lessons to music performance students preparing for auditions and solo recitals.
I have taught online lessons for over four years and have used multiple online communication platforms to teach effective lessons. My students truly enjoy the online interaction during their lessons.
I have taught a wide variety of ages - everyone from 10 years old to 76 years old. One of the great joys I have in teaching is that each student brings their own unique strengths to lessons. My goal is to raise their level of playing while always having fun.

Jeremy S. has been teaching private brass lessons for over 12 years and is currently available to teach weekly lessons at his home in Centerburg, OH or online via the TakeLessons Classroom, Skype, Facetime, Google Hangouts, VSee, or AppearIn. Jeremy S. has helped students improve their playing abilities on trombone, trumpet, tuba, and baritone/euphonium, to successfully audition for youth orchestras, competitions, college auditions, and local events. He provides traditional classical training on trombone, trumpet, tuba, and baritone/euphonium, works with students to play for their own enjoyment and shares his passion for music. In addition, I will provide instruction on music theory and music history as part of instrumental lessons as it applies.
Jeremy received his training at Grace College in 2010, where he received a Bachelors of Music in Instrumental Performance. In addition, he attended the Carnegie Mellon University in 2012 where he received a Masters in Music. He has studied with Peter Sullivan, Jim Kraft, John Kitzman, and Graeme Mutchler.
As an expert in his field, Jeremy looks forward to helping new students achieve their goals. Jeremy's teaching style is positive, supportive, patient and constructive, focused on the individual student's needs, and enjoyable. Jeremy will work at your pace and cares about each of his students. Jeremy will teach you the proper positions and fingerings, technique, how to read music and how to improve your playing.
I am currently accepting new students. I recommend weekly lessons for all students to ensure good progress, but I do offer bi-weekly lessons as well. I can provide information on purchasing or renting an instrument if needed. You can check my availability on my schedule and sign up for lessons with TakeLessons.com. Please e-mail me with any questions or about available times for lessons. I will respond quickly. Thank you for your interest and consideration.

Jeremy, you are a blessing to my playing and I love that you worked with me and didn't get mad, even when I did not practice my part. you are a true inspiration to me in my bass trombone studies and I thank you ever so dearly.
awesome and helpful
First lesson today and things went smoothly. Jeremy took time to determine what my son could and couldn't do and built the lesson around those skills. My son's attention can drift but Jeremy was attentive, patient, and made real world connections.........which I appreciate.+ Read More
Working with Jeremy has been a great experience. I am 57 years old and have had NO music experience. Jeremy knew that from the start and he has been very patient with me and explains everything to where I understand completely what he is saying. I felt so relaxed with Jeremy that I have signed up for 5 more lessons.+ Read More
We have tried lessons with a few different instructors, and haven't been able to find the right mix of professional skill, likability, and ability to teach. Our daughter is on the path to becoming an advanced trombone player, and is already well above her peers at school. She's working on her collegiate audition materials and really needs an instructor who can get her to the next level. Jeremy has made a wonderful first impression, and we are confident that we've found the right instructor to get our daughter to where she wants to be in her music career.+ Read More
Looking forward to my daughter’s next lesson! Jeremy was interested in what my daughter’s goals were for these lessons, had a plan in mind after hearing her thoughts and tried to relate her prior music experience to her lesson. I was very pleased and look forward to having her learn with Jeremy!+ Read More
Jeremy took the time to get to know my son's skill level and knowledge level. He related what he was teaching to other activities important to my child. My son learned more in his first lesson with Jeremy than in a year of private face to face lessons at school. Most importantly, when the lesson was finished, my son wanted to keep playing and playing because he was so excited about what he learned.+ Read More
My daughter is very shy and knew NOTHING about music or her instrument and he's doing great with her!
Jeremy has a very friendly personality and is clearly very proficient on the trombone. Looking forward to more lessons.
My son has been taking lessons for a few weeks now and I can say that this has been a very good decision for us. Jeremy is easygoing and patient. My son enjoys the lessons and taking them via Skype is super easy. If low brass is your thing, Jeremy is your teacher.+ Read More
Jeremy has been great in relating to my junior high age son playing tuba. Developing a rapport via online lessons was a natural progression for the YouTube generation. Jeremy was encouraging and helped develop and grow technical skills to move from last chair to first chair and promoted to next band in the next semester! The ease and flexibility in scheduling allows him to continue in his lessons through busy concert seasons. Looking forward to adding his younger brother to the lesson with Jeremy soon!+ Read More
Jeremy is a fantastic trombone instructor. He demonstrates gentle patience, while maintaining very high standards. My son has accomplished so much in a relatively short period of time. Excellent teacher! Recommend without reservation.
My son had Tuba lessons with Jeremy for almost 2 years and really enjoys it. Jeremy is very professional and knowledgable. Highly recommended.
Jeremy smith has always been my favorite instructor. He makes things interesting and is fun to learn from. He is encouraging and instructing. 5 stars !
He is not afraid to challenge kids. I'm learning a lot.
David (11) has been working with Jeremy for a while now and he's had some rocky patches (getting braces and worse, getting an expander!) but Jeremy was there encouraging David the whole way and sure enough, you can play the trumpet with all that extra metal in your mouth after all!
David also has Brass at school but prefers his sessions with Jeremy where they are centered around David's specific needs and current goals. We have seen such an improvement in both David's ability and confidence which translates directly into more enjoyment playing his chosen instrument, the trumpet.
Great lesson. I actually wrote a review eariler as I didn't realize I'd be prompted by take lessons to post after the lesson so I don't want to write up the same things. I would like to point out that my easily stressed son isn't very stressed about getting braces now that he has Jeremy's support and experience to fall back on.+ Read More
Bit of a first month update. Jeremy is better than expected (and this was a good expectation based on my son's first lesson). I played piano and yet I find none of that knowledge seems to lend itself to trumpet, plus I have no ear for the trumpet. David (my son) can hear himself with a bad buzz but it all sounds the same to me. But back to Jeremy, even though David has been playing Trumpet for a little over a year I had no idea how many basics he was never taught! And Jeremy picked right up on where his knowledge is lacking and they are already rocking through basics I thought David would have learned in Band or at least in Brass/Percussion class. So just really thrilled (both my and my son) that Jeremy quickly saw where David's knowledge was lacking and is already improving his confidence and ability in such a short time.+ Read More
First lesson was very valuable to me and will be a good base to build upon.
I wasn't sure how trumpet lessons would go online as it seems like it would be one of the harder things to teach at a distance. But the first lesson with my middle son went great! David (my son) took to Jeremy pretty quickly, which is a great sign as David doesn't really like "new" people. But he left his lesson excited about what they would be doing the following week.
I also wanted to mention Jeremy's follow up with me was cool in that he recommended a book for David and went the extra step to link it to both Amazon and a local music store to be sure I easily found the correct book. It's the little things like that that show tutors that care about going the extra step to make everything go smoothly.
Flexible, provides feedback. Recommend!
I had Jeremy as a tuba instructor my last year of college. I was a bit skeptical since he looked so young, but after my first few lessons with him, I realized what a valuable teacher I had. He was very supportive, and instead of making me feel like a failure in my mistakes, gave me the instruction and tools necessary to succeed. I wish my time with him had been longer, but I loved the short time we did work together.+ Read More
Since our son has been working with Jeremy, he has a new confidence and has moved to second chair in band placement. His technical skills and musicality have improved, and he is working on fundamentals instead of just working on band music. Our schedules have been very busy, and Jeremy has been very flexible in working with us. Our son loves the online format, and we much appreciate not having to haul him around for lessons!+ Read More
Jeremy challenged me and helped me reach a level of playing that I didn't think was possible for myself. He was not only encouraging, but patient as well, and allowed me to work at my own pace and around my busy schedule. Although very intelligent and skilled in his area of practice, he still allowed room for my own creativity. I highly recommend Jeremy for anyone who is eager to learn and looking for an excellent instructor.+ Read More
He's pretty awesome. I always leave his lessons with something I didn't have before - whether that be trombone knowledge, encouragement, or a good friend chat that was well needed. It's fun to learn from someone who has so much passion for what he does!+ Read More
Really good lessons! Great teaching technique!
I was skeptical about online lessons, but the experience was really great. My son grew leaps and bounds in just 45 minutes. Jeremy is a very patient and skilled teacher. I'm so impressed with him. My son is looking forward to future lessons.
Jeremy is a very talented, enthusiastic instructor and I highly recommend him!
Connected well with the instructor and anticipate learning, growing and meeting my goals with his guidance. Looking forward to putting his suggestions and advice into daily practice.
Jeremy has been teaching baritone to our son for over a year. We appreciate his patience, positive friendly attitude and encouraging words to our child. Jeremy has made learning an instrument fun, and is always challenging our son to remember what they went over in each lesson, and what the focus is going to be for the following week. He has been flexible to accommodate our schedule needs as well. We would highly recommend Jeremy for all levels of instruction!+ Read More
