- Teaching since:
Hi, I'm Jeremiah, and I've been teaching a variety of subjects to students of all ages and levels for over six years.
I moved to China to teach English in 2012. I spent most of my time there working at Hebei Normal University, teaching oral English; academic writing; pronunciation; lexicology; IELTS test prep; and reading. I also taught classes for children and adults, both one-on-one and in groups.
I published my first book, The Crown of Secrets, in 2016. It's a collection of short stories for children, illustrated by artists from around the world. I followed it up with a Crown of Secrets coloring book a year later. Right now I'm writing short fiction; developing a webcomic for kids; editing a lexicology textbook; and working on a collection of Chinese myths.
In mid-2018 I relocated to Asunción, Paraguay, to continue teaching while experiencing a new culture. I've been working primarily with high schoolers and young adults.
In addition to teaching and writing, I'm also a voiceover artist. You can hear my voice announcing stops on the new metro system in Shijiazhuang, China; narrating practice exams for Hebei Province; in repair documentation for car companies; and in English lesson videos.
As a tutor, my goal is to determine my students' needs and priorities, and gear the lessons toward those goals. Some classes focus on reading and acquiring vocabulary and grammatical structures; others take a more creative bent with writing and games; some are almost entirely conversation; still others might focus on specific skills like interviews or business meetings. I have taught students as young as age 3 all the way up to adults.+ Read More
I received my first writing awards in high school, in state- and nation-wide fiction and poetry competitions. Since then, I have self-published a collection of illustrated stories for children (and a matching coloring book); written dozens of short stories; reviewed books and music; and reflected on travel on my blog.
I am currently finishing a lexicology textbook; writing a collection of Chinese myths adapted into English; and shopping my first middle-grade novel to agents.
I taught a variety of courses to university students of varying skill levels at HNU, including:
- Oral English
- IELTS preparation
I designed most of the curriculum and course material myself. My focus was always on making the information relevant and useful to my students. Class sizes ranged from 12 students to 80. Many of my students later continued on to graduate school, some in China and many others abroad.
Completion of the TEFL course guarantees that the teacher has is familiar with, and can implement, communicative education methodologies in the classroom.
I am not a native English speaker and my English is not great. I like public speaking, but when I made a speech in English, I couldn't get confidence and was nervous a bit.
But after he helped me, I got a first prize in an English speech competition. If he didn't help me, I wouldn't get the prize. He is good at listening, and easily figures out what student wants to say in their own speech. He corrected wrong grammar and speech tone for me, And also he gave a lot of advice about my speech structure and communicating skills and humorous part. I strongly recommend him as your great speech teacher!
If you want to find a good listener, and a speech teacher who gives good advice, choose him.
