Jennifer is a great flutist and instructor! She is very knowledgeable, helpful, and really knows how to articulate her ideas and communicate with the student. She is encouraging and creative in her approach towards her students. She helped me very much with my piccolo playing.

I have listened to Jennifer as she gave flute lessons to several young beginning students. I observed that she truly cares about her students and invests herself in their progress. She has a creative teaching style, always coming up with new ways to approach the challenges of each individual student. She spends time to discover the students’ goals and structures their lesson plans accordingly. Jennifer is also a good communicator with the parents of younger students, making sure they are informed and inviting them to observe lessons if they wish. I’m sure you’ll find her a delight to work with.

    Experience

    Flute Instructor

    Aug, 2009 - Present

    Private Studio

I have been teaching private flute lessons since 2009. As a high school student, I taught private lessons for beginners and coached my high school contemporaries as the flute section leader in our marching/concert band. During one summer, I was employed as a coach for an adult flute choir program through the Los Angeles Music Center, which concluded with a concert at the Disney Concert Hall. This program was designed for people who wanted to relearn how to play the flute after years away from their instruments. After the program ended, its director founded another flute choir, which several of the members joined. I participated in this flute choir, and continued to coach the members, for several years. While pursuing my BM at the University of North Texas, I taught private lessons at the Kennedale Independent School District campuses, where I worked with students ranging from 10 to 17 years old. I assisted these students in preparing for local competitions, placement playing tests, and for their college auditions. I also coached several of my colleagues at UNT for chamber music performances, solo competitions, audition tapes, and professional auditions. During my MM at Stony Brook University, I coached my colleagues who are pursuing DMA's, and taught an adult student working toward returning to school for a degree in music.

Visiting music teacher for Abilities First

    Jun, 2018 - May, 2019

    Abilities First/Rhinebeck School of Music

Shortly after being hired at the Rhinebeck School of Music, the director of the school asked if I would like to teach in a classroom setting as part of an exciting new partnership with the Abilities First program based in Poughkeepsie. This program for special needs children has satellite classes in the Red Hook School District, where I taught music classes once a week or biweekly. I worked with three groups of students: high school, middle school, and elementary. I taught in each one of these classes separately. Each class had four to eight students and four to five staff members to assist the students throughout the day. I was one of four teachers teaching music for Abilities First. I taught each of the three classes for 30-minute sessions. Each of the music teachers had a different musical background, which allowed the students to experience several different perspectives on music through these classes. My sessions with the students included: an instrument building workshop, a Disney karaoke day, music trivia games, an introduction to woodwind instruments with live flute demonstration (which was, to my surprise, a big hit), and an instrumental petting zoo. This new partnership between the Rhinebeck School of Music and Abilities First was an amazing opportunity for these incredible students. They have a hunger for learning but were not exposed to music in their classrooms prior to this initiative. In the time that I worked with Abilities First, I learned so much about how people engage with music and how valuable it is to be sharing music with young students.
