I truly, deeply, love classical music, and one of my favorite things is to coach someone through learning lots of these amazing pieces. I encourage my students to approach studying a piece from several angles, like theory and structure, character, physical movement, emotions, story-telling, historical background. In addition to the music itself, other related topics include how to practice, how to listen, how to communicate with an audience, how to turn mistakes into learning experiences, etc.

I have a relaxed yet thorough approach to teaching and playing, and I love working with students of all ages and abilities. As an active performer, both as a soloist and in collaboration with vocalists and instrumentalists, I am classically trained and experienced in many styles of music.
Lessons include ear training, note-reading, basic musicianship, history, theory, and a wide variety of music. I don't pressure my students, but there are plenty of opportunities to perform for those who are interested.

My son took piano lessons with Ms. Burgess during his senior year of high school, and we cannot say enough good about her teaching!  From healthy physical positioning to learning about the history of the composer and composition to the beautiful musicality she is able to pull out of her students - she is a truly gifted teacher.
