My Lessons are customized in a number of ways to create the ideal experience for each student and family.
• Curriculum adheres to student and parent generated long-term goals
• Musical arrangements and accompaniments are created to accommodate individual interests
• Students can learn a variety of skills such as improvisation, effective practice habits, music composition, and many others
• Students have the option to explore multiple instruments.
• Instruction accommodates different learning styles and strengths.
Much of today’s music is created or altered through digital means. For this reason students of all ages should consider exploring different ways to interact with digital music in their lessons such as:
• layering multiple audio tracks,
• creating digital accompaniments to play along to
• looping, editing, and adding effects to recorded audio
These aspects of a lesson not only better prepare students for the likely future of music but it also makes lessons more exciting, creative, and fun!
At Uplift I was the sole music teacher for grades nine through twelve. In addition to teaching choir, general music, and band, I also ran a variety of after school music programs like guitar, a cappella, keyboard club, and the school's first digital music studio.+ Read More
At St. Joseph, I served served as the part-time band director for grades four through eight. Here I taught small group lessons to a variety of different instruments.
I taught part-time general music to Kindergarten through eight grade students. Students learned vocal techniques, recorder, Orff instruments, percussion, keyboard, and guitar.
Definitely recommend lessons with Mr. Jeff. He has lots of patience and a kind smile at all times. He helps us with getting progress very much.
Jeff was very enthusiastic and really wanted to make sure my son was learning to love music.
The best teacher ever. He is always prepared. He has very good teaching techniques. The Lessons are not boring, my 11 year old daughter loves the lessons. He is very professional instructor. Jeff teaches flute for my 10 year old daughter and recorder for my 6 year old son. Both of them enjoy his lessons and he is a very consistent and reliable teacher. I take piano lessons from him when I have some free time as well. Great teacher!
Jeff Johnson is a phenomenal teacher. He's been giving my 13 year old saxophone lessons since the fall, and I've been very impressed with the improvement. He's working with him on both jazz and traditional music and I've seen a lot of growth in the quality of the sound and rhythm of the music. But even more importantly, I've seen a change in my son's attitude. He was thinking of quitting saxophone early in the school year, and now is practicing without being reminded, and wants to stay with it through high school.+ Read More
Jeff is a fantastic music teacher.
He currently teaches piano to my 12 year old daughter. Beyond the technical skills, what makes Jeff different than most teachers is his complete customized / personalized approach. In the world of education, a hot topic is how every student is different and the trend towards personalized learning plans. Jeff actually lives this philosophy. During his first meeting, he spent 30 minutes with me (the parent and person who is paying) understanding my desires, and he spent another 30 minutes with my daughter, understanding her goals and motivations. He then developed an approach that keeps my daughter engaged and motivated, no easy task for a 12 year old with ADD/ADHD.
He mixes teaching traditional piano theory with using modern technology (GarageBand) to create music, as well as focusing on he learning songs that she enjoys (pop music.) The curriculum that my daughter is following is 100% tailored to her.... there is no set music book that she is working her way through. Her practice time usually involves her making recordings of new pieces she is trying to create, as well as working on playing songs she likes. He is positive and builds her up during lessons, while also managing to be honest with her when she hasn't lived up to expectations (not so much about her skills, but about her following through on practice time commitments.)
Jeff's personality is great - easy for both parent and daughter to get along. I listen to my daughter during the lesson and she is engaged, which is the #1 goal. From my end, Jeff is priced appropriately for an in-home teacher, he is flexible when scheduling issues arise, and he communicates with me very well (usually texting for simple issues, and phone calls for more in-depth talks.)
Note: if your goal is a straightforward, traditional "skill and drill" teacher - where your child will learn the scales but be bored and hate piano - then Jeff is NOT your teacher. If your goal is to have your child engaged and enjoying the process of learning, and perhaps fall in love with music/piano along the way, and progress at his/her own pace, then you should definitely give Jeff a try!
Jeff is the fifth piano teacher my daughter has had in the past three years and he is by far the best, as measured by my daughter's engagement and enjoyment. We have had a variety of different styles (including skill & drill, rock n' roll, traditional, etc) and we finally found the right fit for my daughter. Last year she had a traditional teacher -- she learned a lot, she progressed a lot, and she hated every minute of it....begging me not to make her continue. This year with Jeff, the process is entirely different, the lessons and practice time is entirely different, the pace is entirely different (not quicker or slower....just different) and the love of music has returned to my daughter!
Will she become a professional piano player? I have no idea. Does she run to the door when Jeff arrives (versus hide in her closet which she did last year)? Yes, she does. For us, that is success and that is directly tied to Jeff being a great teacher.
I highly recommend him.
I worked with Jeff at a Chicago high school where his dedication and passion for music was witnessed by many people!
He is down-to-earth, easy to talk to and very friendly!
