Live Online English Lessons
~ I use the Zoom app for live interactive English lessons from the comfort of your home. For five years in Switzerland, I taught English as a Second Language to all levels and all ages at the Inlingua International School of Languages in the bilingual city of Biel/Bienne. This included both group and one-on-one lessons, from dead beginners through advanced students studying for TEFL, TOEFL, and Proficiency exams. After that, I spent three years in Spain as the director of the same language franchise in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where my duties included prepping students for exams, summer school youth programs, private and group lessons, coordinating scheduling, and working with beginners through intermediate all the way up to the most advanced. The Inlingua method is based on total immersion where all dialog and exercises are conducted solely in the target language. As such I have taught thousands of students from all over the world, many of whom I had no knowledge whatsoever of their native idiom. My mother tongue is American English, but I am an ardent linguist fluent in Spanish, French, German, Schviitzertuutsch, and Italian. I have also studied (or am still studying) Arabic, Russian, Hindi / Urdu, Esperanto, Portuguese, Dutch, Greek, and Silbo Gomero. Therefore, I intimately understand both the structures as well as the pitfalls that language learning can entail. This gives me a great deal of empathy for the learner, and as such, I have the realization that there are many modes of learning – a cookie-cutter “one-size-fits-all” approach is not optimum. If there ever appears to be an impasse, there will always be other ways I am able to approach the materials so that deep and lasting comprehension can be established. I have worked with a great number of textbooks, and prep books. If you are currently using a certain book or method that you are comfortable with, we can work with that. Otherwise, I can give my recommendations. For intermediate and advanced learners, I like to begin with a placement test to see which areas you have mastery of and which areas you are less comfortable (or unfamiliar) with. From that I can derive a curriculum tailored to both your long-term and short-term needs. If you are serious about learning English as a Second Language and/or prepping for a certification exam, you owe it to yourself to study with a teacher who has years of experience in the trenches and also possesses the deep knowledge of the subject to bring you to full fluency the quickest and most efficient way! I look forward to helping you achieve your life goals!
About Jeff B.

People study subjects for a great number of reasons, consequently I customize my lessons to each individual student's needs and wants. We learn different ways. Some of us are more visual, some more tactile, some more intuitive, some more cerebral, etc. Understanding this allows me to adapt to each person's most natural mode of learning so that the material is grasped more easily (therefore more quickly), and so that it is retained longer. I would be honored to share my experience and knowledge with you.

Jeff is so full of knowledge and experiences from all over the world! I am an advanced Amateur violinist who mostly plays non-classical styles and I chose to learn from him because of his interesting variety and I have not been disappointed!! I’m learning so much about music theory taught in a very unique way specific to violin. I look forward to continuing to build my skills with Jeff!

Mr. Jeff Brent is a true teacher's teacher! He understands how to effectively communicate and convey to students' difficult aspects of learning in the most understandable way possible, so students master their instruments. The books he wrote are the best ones ever written. And Mr. Brent knows and wrote books with the who's who of Saxophone artists!

I've played guitar off and on since my teens, but was self-taught. I had the basic skills to play along with most songs, but no understanding of how to build a song or a melody. In the year I've spent with Jeff, he opened my eyes to music theory in a way that is instantly applicable. I am much more comfortable improvising around a chord progression. I can see the patterns in songs and how and when to utilize different scales and modes. Jeff's book with Schell Barkley, Fingering Mastery - scales and modes for the guitar fretboard, demystifies these topics with images and patterns that are different from any other theory book I've seen. His backing tracks provide the foundation to apply these patterns, and his demonstrations during lessons bring them together using examples from standards and popular songs. Last thing - Jeff has an incredibly strong understanding of world music and music history, much of which is earned through decades of playing live music around the world. I find this adds a lot to the experience of a lesson with him. I recommend Jeff without reservation.
