About Joshua D.
I have an unquenchable passion to learn about and create music. I grew up in a small fishing village in Nova Scotia, Canada, with very little concert music around me. After hearing a digital piano play a Schubert Impromptu, I devoted my spare time to piano practice until I could play that piece. Since then, I have never stopped learning about and writing music. Sharing the joy of music with students and walking with them on a journey of learning is my greatest joy.
*** Lesson Details ***
Learning through collaboration is the most natural way to study piano. First hand experience with the instrument, imitating a good role model, and sharing the experience of discovery all create a fun, energetic, and relaxed environment.
Because piano lessons are a collaboration, both the teacher and the student share the responsibility for growth and development. The student is responsible to come adequately prepared to the lesson and the teacher is responsible to provide helpful and challenging guidance to the student.
You or your child should expect to see progress after a few months of lessons. You will have a better understanding of how to imagine musical ideas, how to bring those ideas to life through the piano, and also how music notation relates to the music-making process.
Piano is fun! Listening to music is fun. Creating art with your hands and with other people is a worthwhile endeavor and is only more relevant and important in this age of digital technology. I have many goals in mind for each lesson, but if you've had a good time, found some energy and learned something about either music or yourself, we've had a successful lesson.
What I will do in every lesson:
1) I will do my best to make every music lesson memorable and fun.
2) I will never expect you to do more than your best, though I may ask you to do more than you think you are able. Challenges are important for growth.
3) I will share in the learning experience with you. I have spent my life studying music and have learned from some of the best in the field. I promise to share that knowledge and experience with you in each lesson. I hope to never stop learning and teaching will me keep learning. Even my youngest and most inexperienced students have created music or come up with ideas that surprised me. Students often have things to teach me as well.
What you will do in every lesson:
1) Try new things.
2) Come prepared to play. I can teach you how to play piano. I can't play it for you! You need to do that yourself.
3) Make mistakes. Otherwise, how will you learn?
I look forward to making music with you.
