Sign Language with Jamie R.

Hello! My name is Jamie. I have worked with the Deaf in some compacity for the past 20 years. I am fluent in ASL. For 16 years I taught both Deaf and hearing children in school. I have also taught Deaf and hearing young adults on a college level. I have taught sign language a number of times over the past several years to both individuals and groups of people. One of the reasons I became involved with the Deaf and had a desire to teach them is because I myself am hearing-impaired. I was 9 years old when I found out that I had a mild hearing loss. It has gradually worsened over the years to the point that I have about 20% of hearing in one ear and about 65% left in the other. It's been quite an adjustment and quite the journey to where I am today. But, I love who I am and what I do. Though I'm not currently teaching in a school, I do love teaching the Deaf and teaching hearing folk how to sign and communicate with the Deaf. Do you have a desire to learn sign language because of a Deaf family member or friend or coworker? Have you suddenly found yourself thrust into the Deaf world and aren't sure what to do? Do you have a group of people, maybe a church that would like to start a Deaf ministry and need to learn the language? Or a group of friends who just want to learn for the fun of it?
