    About Jamie H.

I have almost ten years of experience teaching private lessons and high school and middle school classes in music theory, songwriting and instrumental technique. My most recent teaching experience was with the music ed nonprofit MIMA Music, where I served as their educational director, overseeing all of the classroom operations in NYC. I have also worked as a jingle writer and touring musician (on bass and sax). My teaching philosophy is drawn from my experience as a student. Theory and technique can seem daunting to a new student. The most important part of teaching is to inspire the students to feel confident in their ability to learn the instrument. It's all about where you are with the music and what you want to learn from it.

Jamie is the best, the best, the best. So inspiring to be around. A musical whiz, extremely patient, generous -- a teacher for the ages. And those saxophone solos!

Breadth of experience and depth of knowledge! If you take lessons with Jamie, you should expect a combination of a deep academic/professional understanding of high-level music theory, composition, and instrument technique with an egalitarian perspective on music shaped by a concern for you as an artist. I worked with him for 3 years teaching music across NYC and designing music curricula. He continually assessed my musical weaknesses and tactically designed solutions to problems I didn't know existed. He would energetically and clearly explain the principles and strategies of good composition and then challenge me to bend the rules through improvisation. He is open to any ideas you have and strikes a balance between talent, humility, and perpetual curiosity.

Jamie is a wonderful presence both on the saxophone and in person. He brought peace, attention and professionality to our shows. He understands group dynamics and how to share a creative space with other artists. He also seems to have a keen understanding of teaching creative techniques. I highly recommend his expertise.

    Experience

    Educational Director

    Aug, 2014 - Jan, 2016

    MIMA Music

As the educational director with music ed nonprofit MIMA, I worked with a variety of high school and middle school groups around the New York City area, teaching songwriting, general music, and introductory instrumental technique. I designed curriculums to highlight different aspects of music for choir singers, rappers, poets and concert band members to create their own original compositions.
