Hey, there. My name is James. I graduated from New York University in May 2013 with a B.M. in Music Performance on classical trumpet. I've been playing trumpet for about 12 years now and know the instrument very well. I've also been playing piano for 12 years (though not as seriously as trumpet) and bass guitar for 7 years. I started playing trombone right around the time I graduated and managed to pick it up quickly. I feel confident teaching trombone at the beginner and intermediate levels. My B.M. in Music Performance comes with a great knowledge of music theory and listening skills, so I can teach that, too. I've been a music instructor with the Monsignor Farrell High School band programs for the past four years and was on staff when our marching band won the USSBA Group I Open National Championship. I've taught some of their trumpet players privately for some time, so I have experience teaching people privately. *** Lesson Details *** My lessons are fairly laid back. I have a number of method books to use for trumpet and trombone, including the Arban's method, the Clarke method, and the Caruso method. My music theory lessons will use mostly handouts that I write out myself, based on my music theory instruction. My bass lessons will consist of techniques I learned and developed after years of figuring out the instrument on my own. After a few months, I hope my students learn how to think not like a trumpet player or a bass player, but like a well-rounded musician, listening to themselves as they play as opposed to just playing notes on a page. *** Studio Equipment *** For instrument lessons, I will provide my own instrument and materials for teaching. I will expect the student to provide his/her own instrument. I will provide a music stand and can photocopy any pages in my home as necessary. For music theory, I will provide teaching materials. I will expect my student to have staff paper and a pencil (I prefer my students not use pen because crossing out can lead to problems). If necessary, I may also provide staff paper and a pencil. *** Travel Equipment *** For instrument lessons, I will provide my own instrument and materials for teaching. I will expect the student to provide his/her own instrument. It'd be nice if they have their own music stand, but I can bring one if necessary. A practice amp would also be recommended for bass guitar students. A photocopier would also be nice so I can simply photocopy relevant pages from books instead of forcing the student to buy a book him/herself. If no working photocopier is available in the student's home, I'll make an effort to remember to make copies in advance. For music theory, I will provide teaching materials. I will expect my student to have staff paper and a pencil (I prefer my students not use pen because crossing out can lead to problems). If necessary, I may also provide staff paper. *** Specialties *** Trumpet and Trombone: Classical Bass guitar: Funk/rock Music Theory: Classical
