Hello everyone! My name is James Patrick. I am a working actor in NYC, and a sometime poet/playwright/screenwriter. I have been acting Off-Broadway and in regional theater for many years. A great deal of my work has been in Shakespeare, Chekhov, and the classics. For many years now, I have been teaching acting, Shakespeare, audition prep, and script analysis, to individuals and student groups. I have been a teaching-artist in schools all across NYC, and I have helped numerous adult actors get accepted into top graduate acting programs. I received my BFA from the Boston University School of Theater, and studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts and the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts.

Jamie helped prepare me for a few high pressure auditions. He has an incredible depth of knowledge when it comes to classical text and the technicality of speaking verse. His experience as a performer enables him to give insightful clear direction that helps the the actor to connect with the material. As well he knows how to create a calm working environment which is essential to personal creative work. I am teacher myself at the Neighbourhood Playhouse in Manhattan and I would recommend Jamie to any of my students looking to prepare complicated text and verse.

James Nelson is an AMAZING teacher and actor. I have had the good fortune of working with him on Shakespeare through the Classic Stage Company Teaching Artist program, and he is a fantastic teacher. He is an extremely knowledgeable and passionate coach, one-on-one or in groups. Smart, fun, joyous, helpful, and deeply fascinated by all types of work. I've also had the pleasure of seeing him perform in many plays the past few years, and he is a phenomenal actor and artist both onstage and off. He internalizes text in an extremely visceral, intelligent, beautiful way. I highly recommend James for any type of coaching!

I've known Jamie for a number of years and have called on him intermittently when stuck on a particular scene/monologue or just needing an extra eye. No other coach is able to get to the heart, not just of what's going on, but in helping me tell MY VERSION of the story. He's not afraid to tell you when you may have strayed too far in an interpretation, but ultimately he is able to help you find something you can really call your own. James is able to get you there though a wonderfully diverse set of channels. He can work with you on voice or movement or simply getting something into your body. But he also knows how to get into the complexities of all kinds of text. It makes sense, he's not just a coach, but a successful working actor as well! Not only this, he's one of the loveliest people you will ever meet! I'd recommend Jamie for anyone looking to get stronger on a piece in particular, or on a specific area of your acting in general!

    Experience

    Teaching Artist

    May, 2012 - Present

    Classic Stage Company

For five consecutive years, I have been a teaching artist with CSC (an Off-Broadway theater where I have also acted in three main stage productions, opposite Maggie Gyllenhaal and Ethan Hawke.) My colleagues and I visit public and private schools around the city, teaching a series of workshops on a given Shakespearean play. The lessons focus on team-building, collaboration, text analysis, comprehension, and performance.

    Private Coach

    Jan, 2013 - Jan, 2016

    Independent

For many years, I have helped adult actors prepare their classical audition material for grad school auditions, and I've helped many people get accepted into top acting programs.

    Teaching Artist

    Sep, 2009 - Apr, 2010

    American Shakespeare Center

With the American Shakespeare Center's touring company, I performed three classic plays in venues all around the country. In conjunction with the performances, my colleagues and I taught a series of classes and workshops in various cities. Some workshops focused on analysis of a particular play, and others more broadly focused on script analysis, staging, comprehension, and performance.

    Teacher's Assistant

    Sep, 2005 - May, 2008

    Boston University

While studying at Boston University, I would consistently work as a teachers assistant, aiding and coach the students a few years younger than me, in scene study, Shakespeare, and Linklater voice work.
