Hello everyone! Please have a look around my profile and feel free to contact me. I have taught privately since 2009 and joined takelessons.com in 2014.
I strongly feel each student needs lesson goals tailored to what he or she wants to take away from music. Getting ready for a college performance degree, making it to state solo contest, surviving band music, or simply discovering the huge scope of music available to us these days are each worthy goals, but require different preparation. I will work with you to figure out where your interests lie and focus on those, first and foremost!
My education includes bachelor's and master's degrees in trumpet performance from Lawrence University and UW-Milwaukee, respectively. In addition to my private studio, I maintain an active teaching schedule with the Fairfield Jr/Sr High School marching band and Oregon Crusaders drum and bugle corps, as well as freelancing throughout Michiana.
Thanks for your time, and happy practicing!

My daughter planned to join band at her high school for her junior year. She had not taken lessons in the past and we were concerned that she would be too far behind the other teens, and private lessons in the area were at inconvenient times.
Takelessons was the perfect solution for us. James was absolutely excellent as an instructor. He was patient, fun, talented, and inspiring. My daughter had never played trumpet before and in just 2 months she is able to play with the band and she is doing phenomenal! I highly recommend James!
James is a wonderful teacher: patient knowledgeable and methodical. I gained tremendous amount of knowledge and hands on experience through his lessons. He is perfect for students of any age, highly recommended.
James has been an awesome teacher for my son. He has helped my son have expanded range on the trumpet and has helped him with his technical abilities. James worked with both my son's assigned music from band and worked to find more fun and creative music to play. I highly recommend James!+ Read More
VERY good teacher. Patient and kind as well as very understanding. I get very embarrassed when people try to teach me things, but James makes me feel very comfortable with learning how to play. :-)
My son is having an excellent experience with James. What a talented guy. He not only is providing instruction but also inspiration to get better. My son hit a high C in his lesson the other day and sent me a text. A very rare occurrence :)
Mr James is so friendly; he put us at ease instantly because my son was quite nervous. I appreciate the instant feedback (which is nearly impossible in his huge band class), because he knows what he did correctly, and he learns what he did wrong so he can correct it. I also appreciate his tips on listening to other trumpet players online so Gabe can get an idea in his head to strive for. Mr James also has a nice sense of humor, which is great because we are goofy people! ^.^ Even though my son is just in his first year of trumpet, we can see the places he'll go and the skills he has to look forward to. I definitely recommend this teacher!+ Read More

Om really liked Mr James. Thanks
Very good personality
Son felt great and motivated after the lesson. James was thorough and did a follow up email with attachments. Overall fantastic experience!
We have had 3 lesson so far. James has been on time, and stayed on a few min after. My son has enjoy the lesson then thinks that Band Class at School is going better! He send a summary afterward on what he need to work on before the next meeting.
Very positive experience! thanks!
Great teacher, patient, enthusiastic and knowledgeable.
Trenton's first session was fun and motivated him to learn more about his instrument.
James is awesome!
James was wonderful with my 12 year old. My son was truly a beginner in every way. James was able to help my child to get passed his shyness and embarrassment and play.
My son adores James! This young man is polite, funny and keeps Logan interested in playing the French Horn. We moved here recently from California and discovered that the school that my son would be going to does not offer a string program which is what he plays so he decided to pick up French Horn instead. Another student at the school had been trying to help teach him but she wasn't a very good tutor and he was getting frustrated. After just one lesson my son is feeling more confident in his abilities and learning the right technique to play the French Horn to make him successful. I also like that not only does James teach how to play the Horn, he also gets him interested in learning about others who play and just music in general. Amazing teacher A++++ Read More
James is knowledgeable and affable. Absolutely recommend!
Outstanding, knowledgeable instructor. Very personable and a positive approach. I went away with some solid advice and a much better feeling about my ability.
James is an excellent and patient teacher. My daughter loves working with him and she is excited to practice what he has taught her after he leaves. Overall, James is very personable, kind and professional. I would recommend him to anyone!
James really took his time and explained everything to my daughter who is new to French Horn. He gave her perfect exercises to improve and stay on track until their next lesson.
James teaches our son (13) the horn. He is a true professional in his art and does a fantastic job in teaching it to others. He is knowledgeable in his craft and very patient in laying a solid foundation from which to build on. Our son learned more in his first 30 minute class about how to work on areas that were frustrating him, than the 1.5 years lost in band class. Thank you James for getting our son to start playing with confidence, and best yet enjoying his horn again!+ Read More
