I am currently a freelance violist and strings teacher in the greater Hartford area. I completed a masters degree in viola performance at The Hartt School in December of 2018.
In the past year, I have collaborated with Teaching Artists International in traveling to Peru and Guatemala to observe and teach students immersed in the El Sistema philosophy. El Sistema began in Venezuela as a method of orchestral instruction that carries with it an essential component of social justice and inclusivity.
Teaching is a great opportunity to get to know a young artist. My primary goal as a teacher has always been to help my students develop technical and musical abilities through regular practice and problem solving approaches, while always encouraging a unique musical voice. In our lessons together, we will explore your personal musical interests, and I will also introduce you to an applied technical approach to the viola and violin, which I will cater to your individual technical and musical needs!
I would be more than happy to answer any specific questions you have about my pedagogical approach, and I look forward to hearing from you!
All the best,

Really looking forward to further lessons. I especially appreciate the numerous technical tips and practice suggestions for ease of play and better sound. Really nice and patient; great teaching personality.
It was a pleasure working with Jake. Looking forward to our next lesson.
Jake was great. Articulate, calm, encouraging. He understood my requests and was quick to asses what action to take. Thanks Jake.
Jake has a keen sense of how to pace lessons, and has a sharp eye & ear for technique. If I had just taught myself through YouTube I might be okay at violin, but the quality would be nowhere near where it is today without Jake's help. These lessons have been a good investment and I look forward to improving even more.Show More

My daughter began her first year of violin lessons with Jake at her school when she was in 4th grade . She enjoyed taking lessons with him and remembers discussions they had about the history of the violin. She said he was a good teacher - patient and explained things well. She received a good fundamental background in the violin and that has carried over to her continuing into her second year of lessons.Show More
Fantastic teacher! I worked with Jake at the Incredible Children's Art Network (formerly of Santa Barbara, CA) and had watched Jake build positive healthy relationships with each of our students. He focused on establishing a safe learning environment and individualizing lessons for students with various needs.
His easy going temperament, open mind, and professional mindset made him easy to work with as a colleague.
I worked with Jake at the Incredible Children's Art Network. Jake has a dedication to students' learning, great adaptability and flexibility with different learners, and a willingness to embrace feedback to better his teaching. He forms meaningful relationships with his students and uses his expertise to help their musical development.
Parents: He's responsible, respectful, and genuinely cares for your child's musical development. At the Incredible Children's Art Network, he worked extensively with first-year, beginning violin students (ages 7-9).
Private students: Jake is an accomplished performer, great communicator, and can help you grow musically, while making violin/viola fun.

I ran after school group violin lessons in the Santa Barbara and Goleta areas. For many of my students, this group lesson was their first experience with playing violin, so my responsibilities included setting each student up comfortably, and teaching the very basics of technique.
