    About Jacob W.

Hi, I'm Jacob Wise. I'm an Austin native and graduate of both UT-Austin and the University of North Texas, where I received a master's degree in Jazz Studies. I've been playing for 25 years, and have taught hundreds of students. I'm a jazz player, but love all guitar styles - so if you're interested in rock, blues, R&B, or classical, I can definitely help you. I'd love to help you with technique, theory, reading, improvisation, ear training, and more. Beginners and kids are definitely welcome – I'll show you the basics, and having you playing chord progressions and songs right away! I've released a jazz CD of original music, and have performed at jazz clubs all over Texas. For the last few years, I've worked on cruise ships, traveling the world and backing up guest entertainers in a wide range of styles. I've played in blues and funk bands, backed up singer-songwriters, played solo jazz gigs, and even taught a steel pan drumming class on a cruise ship!

    Experience

    Guitar Instructor

    Aug, 2015 - Present

    New School Of Music

I currently teach group guitar classes at a local charter school for disadvantaged children aged 6-12. We focus on learning songs, note reading, and the fundamentals of music, and have lots of fun! Teaching these group guitar classes has given me the ability to teach kids of all ages, no matter how young.

    Guitarist - House Band

    Jun, 2011 - Jun, 2015

    Princess Cruise Lines, LTD.

As a member of the house band on Princess Cruise ships, I played production shows and backed up guest entertainers in an 800-seat theater. Styles ranged from Motown, to oldies rock 'n roll, to big band swing, classical, and beyond. I also played jazz sets and solo guitar. I completed 8 contracts on 8 different ships, traveling all over the globe.

    Teaching Fellow - Jazz Guitar

    Aug, 2010 - May, 2011

    University of North Texas

As a Teaching Fellow for Jazz Guitar, I was responsible for teaching undergraduate guitar majors in one of the largest Jazz Studies programs in the U.S. I was responsible for teaching basics of music theory (chords, scales, and arpeggios) as well as sight-reading, repertoire, and improvisation, making sure that students were well prepared for end-of-semester jury evaluations. I also conducted the "Super 400" guitar ensemble (6 guitars + rhythm section).

    Guitar Instructor

    Sep, 2001 - Aug, 2009

    Austin School of Music

As a guitar instructor, I taught lessons to hundreds of beginners and intermediate players of all ages (8-65). With very young students I taught basic note reading, chords and songs. I also taught rock riffs, songs, and techniques, as well as music theory.
