    About Jacob M.

When I was younger, music pretty much fell into my lap. I had never listened to music, nor played an instrument. I owe it all to my neighbor, who was my best friend, and older brother I never had. I envied everything he did, and bass was one of the many things he did well that stuck with me. I started in a garageband, that is what shaped me into what I am today. Sitting in a room and learning song after song is great, but having an open personality and warming up to other musicians will open doors you would never believe. Learn to ask questions, be assertive, be extroverted in music, go to concerts, immerse yourself! Not long after getting familiar with the bass , I took private professional bass guitar lessons with Berklee college of music graduates, Damon and Dominic Castillo, as well as master jazz guitarist, Jerry Coelho out of Santa Maria, CA. Eventually branching out with Argentine bassist , Ernesto Gonzales. He helped me with chordal theory, and ideas on playing world style music. Based on your skill level, we would start from the beginning and touch on single notes. Do you know the names of each note on each string, do you know the octaves, where they can all be found in a split second. This helps because the guitar neck repeats in many positions, so having a handle on that portion will fast forward you into more in depth theory. Interval training, ear training, triads, arpeggios.. the building blocks of bass playing. Chords are a great way to take bass to a new level, especially when composing your own material. Scales are great for finger dexterity, and for musical conversation with other like minded musicians. Knowing what scale to play on what note based on the chord played by the other musician. It all sounds difficult, but so does chemistry or math, the more you practice and make it FUN, the better. Hope to hear from you! *** Travel Equipment *** 1 practice amp and 1 bass on my part and their part *** Specialties *** Fingerstyle, alternate picking, left hand technique (muting, ghost notes) Slap-Pop, Tap. Fluent in Jazz, Funk, Soul, Rock ,Alternative, pretty much all around.

    Experience

    Music Director/ Bass Chair

    Mar, 2012 - Present

    Extreme Gospel Worship Center

Not long after meeting musicians, I was asked to help out a church who needed a bassist. I fell in love with the church, and became closer to God in ways I can't explain. I absolutely love playing for the lord and am well experienced with just about every worship song out there. RnB/ Gospel are my favorite genres.

    Freelance Bassist/Music Producer

    Jun, 2011 - Present

    Self- Employed

After graduating from college in the field of nursing and public health, another passion of mine, I found myself missing music, and networking around the city of San Diego. I started saying Yes to every gig, that eventually got my name out in the scene. I receive calls every other day regarding: sub gigs, original bands, drama plays, church organizations, studio work. This list goes on.
