I am a human! Music plays a huge role in my life, but other activities, passions, and relationships are also very important to me. That being said, I’ve devoted a huge portion of my last 14 years to music, so I’d like to share that part of my story with you.
I started playing drums when I was nine. I began playing professionally when I was 16, and I taught my first students shortly after that. When I was in high school, I had the privilege of playing at the Peaks Jazz Festival with some amazing guest performers, including Grammy-winning artists like Eric Marienthal, Dave Weckl, Ed Calle, and Randy Brecker. I’ve studied drums formally nearly since I began playing, and have had several wonderful teachers. I’ve combined what I felt were the most positive aspects of my their teaching to form my own teaching approach. Teaching has given me a valuable perspective on the drums and on myself. It’s an ever-changing challenge that I enjoy immensely.
I graduated cum laude from the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music after studying drum set performance, composition, and music production. While still in college, I formed a jazz trio and started writing original music for us to play. I still perform with this group on a regular basis. I also perform frequently as a sideman in other people’s groups in various genres. I’ve also been fortunate enough to perform at the Kennedy Center and at the Umbria Jazz Festival. In addition to drumming, I also play the piano, write commercial music, and produce electronic music.
Like I mentioned before, I’m a human first! Outside of music, I enjoy baking, biking, traveling, and improvisatory acting. I love cookies and puns. If you have any questions about me, feel free to email me at ask by clicking "Ask a Question." Now, enough about me, I’m looking forward to learning about you!
I work as a freelance drummer playing music in many different styles. I also work with venue managers and owners and manage band members for groups I lead.
I get frustrated really easily, but Jack made it much easier for me to play and practice but still have fun. He's always in a good mood for our lessons and seems to really enjoy teaching. Great teacher!
I just had my first lesson with Jack so much fun and he was very knowledgable and I got to play alot my old teacher talked too much. I learned alot but it was also fun and didn't seem hard.
What's really unique about the way Jack teaches as opposed to youtube videos for example, is that he shows you how to do things so you can do it your way, not just one way of doing it. Instead of just showing you how to do sidechain compression, he explains how it works so you can understand and use it however you want!+ Read More
I'd stopped and started lessons a few times in the past, but never really found a teacher who clicked- until now. Jack has made learning the drums seem fun and approachable. He's great at helping me divide practice into bite sized, simple tasks to work on, and has helped me to build the confidence I needed to keep going with it. Now I'm always looking forward to the next lesson. Thank you Jack!+ Read More
Jack is really good at breaking things down and making them easy to understand. Amazing teacher! And fun to jam with.
He has a really clear, systematic approach to the drums. He's all about helping you play the music you want to play, and he doesn't have a one-size-fits-all teaching approach. Awesome teacher!
I recommended Jack to my students when I moved away, and they were all pleased with his lessons.
Jack is an amazing drummer and a really good teacher, too. My favorite part of the lessons are when we'll work on something by playing together.
He was a great teacher and super fun and funny. Drums are hard but are lessons are fun!
Jack has such a unique approach to the drums. He's all about getting control of the instrument and can help you work on really specific problems. Great to work with!
Jack was extremely knowledgeable and very patient with my son. Would certainly recommend.
