The Korean language is a fusion of the far east. The pure Korean language system appeared only in the 15th century, replacing the then-standard Chinese language. As with its country's history, Korean is a great alternative to learning Chinese and Japanese since the Korean language shares similar grammatical structures with the Japanese language, while 70% of its vocabulary is a derivative of the Chinese language.
My lessons stem from my interests and desire to share what I do and love most. Working as a Korean-to-English translator and subtitle contributor, I learned how to understand and approach the difference between the two languages. I love seeing how some expressions can directly be converted and why others could never be. Students soon come to learn that navigating the space between Korean and English is worth the effort.
As a Korean-American, I can depend on my mother tongue (it's sometimes instincts!) But as a non-native, mechanics must be in place in order for clear comprehension and usage. So my core curriculum centers around understanding the basics of the mechanics and compounding that basic knowledge with similar phrases--especially those common in conversations. I believe fluency in conversations is key to long-term fluency. So much of my lessons focus on grammar with extensive conversational exercises.
My insight has proven to be helpful to both beginner and intermediate speakers who want to break the barrier and leap towards speaking, composing, and understanding Korean more fluently. I want to share what I love and do best with students who are willing to dedicate their time and effort in learning Korean. I am very direct and honest with your progress but I will do everything in my power to make sure you get the attention and help you deserve to improve your skills in Korean.

Hey! I'm Ivey. I've worked with children's book publishers and a Korean broadcasting channel in managing Korean-to-English translations. I also genuinely enjoy translating, which is why I've worked as a freelance translator for my side job. These experiences and interests, I believe, place me in a unique position to teach Korean. I have developed a curriculum of my own that describes Korean grammar in the way I believe is most functional, memorable, and engaging.
As a tutor, I am committed to my lessons and my student's journey. I adjust my curriculum and tailor my lessons to meet the needs of my students and to make sure that my students are engaged and challenged.
I genuinely want to help those who desire to understand Korean more deeply and more fluidly. If you are interested, please reach out to me!
Ivey is the best!!! My daughter has been working with her for a few months, and her knowledge and use of Korean have improved significantly. Ivey is always prepared and provides very substantive lessons, materials, and homework. Her pacing is excellent. A lesson with Ivey is the highlight of my daughter's week. Interpersonally, Ivey is very pleasant, positive, and provides great energy. Her teaching is high quality -- and this is coming from someone who regularly assesses college faculty. Thank you Ivey for all your work in helping my daughter works towards her goal of being fluent in Korean.+ Read More
I absolutely loved my lessons from Ivey. From the start, she called me to ask about what I wanted to learn, how I enjoyed learning, and other things to really tailor the class to the student. She made good use of Google Docs so you can review material from anywhere, make adjustments, or notes for future questions. Ivey is great about answering questions, clarifying confusion, and just an overall great teacher who makes learning fun and easy. When my other teachers reached complicated grammar points I'd covered with Ivey, they were amazed how solid my understanding was. Ivey is one of the best teachers I've had (including my 8 years in college) -- I would highly recommend her for anyone interested in learning Korean.+ Read More
Great start! Looking forward to more lessons!
It has been 5 months since I've started working with Ivey and I started from simply reading Hangul to writing a short essay in Korean. She is incredibly patient, encouraging, and funny and she structured the lessons in a way that allowed me to start composing sentences after learning the basic structures. I love how she makes her own worksheets and materials and how clearly she can explain the different language concepts between Enligh and Korean. I am planning to go to Korea this summer and I feel really prepared and ready thanks to Ivey.+ Read More

She made me feel comfortable speaking korean, very patient & I overall just had a great experience!
Ivey was my ESL tutor in college and later my Korean tutor. I needed to travel to Korea for an internship and she recommended the best books for conversational Korean, helped me with basic Korean skills and she even hooked me up with her friends in Korea for some cultural experience. She is a great tutor and a great person.+ Read More
Ivey has a great sense of humor and is absolutely a delight to work with. I needed Korean lessons to prepare myself for TeachforAmerica in Korea and she made it super enjoyable with her lessons. She utilizes KDrama and Korean songs to supplement listening and conversational Korean. She even took into account some of my favorite Korean bands for supplements in the lessons. She likes to challenge you but makes it fun so it works out at the end. I would definitely recommend her. If you are a KPOP fan, she is your choice.+ Read More
