Music is the language of emotion. Just as children learn to speak their native language before they can read, many of us understand music's ability to move us without having studied it. But music theory teaches us how to read, write, and create with that language, just as learning letters, words, sentence-building, and grammar allow us to communicate fluently with words—and appreciate the nuances of our language even more.

Some music theory students feel daunted by how mathematical music theory is. But it's the same as anything; driving a car, when you look closely, is about physics; gardening can be explained through chemistry; the miracle of our ecosystem can be interpreted through biology; and music, for all its emotional depth, is built on soundwaves. Those invisible forces can be understood through mathematics. My job is to help you maintain your connection to the passion of music itself, the sensations it provokes, while speaking it like a language and building it like an equation.

A work of art transcends the process of mixing paints. Music transcends the nuts and bolts of its construction. The artist's work is to study the pieces which build a composition, develop their skill at combining those pieces, and assemble breathtaking apparitions which disguise the individual components. Eventually the labor of wielding music's tools and components becomes a dance, a nuanced process of intuition, itself a work of art.

That's what I offer. A passionate journey into the heart of music's underground laboratory, a richly imaginative tour of its engineering facility, and an apprenticeship in the millennia-old trade of studying, assembling, and constructing the elegant scaffolding music requires to move its listeners' hearts.

About Isaac W.

Learning involves playfulness, curiosity, and personal connection. I've studied how people learn and how people play, along with 25 years of professional and performance experience, and I focus it entirely on you. We start with what you love, discover what you already know, then make unexpected connections to build something together.

Over Zoom I use a three-camera system so you can see me face-to-face like an in-person lesson, with two cameras focused on my hands and whiteboard space so you're seeing things from my perspective. This helps us communicate and accelerates your learning.

Learning, to me, is a wildly creative process. It feels suspiciously like goofing off when we absorb information faster than we expected. It's my job to help you play, to get you over your hurdles, to explain and demonstrate things in a way that makes sense TO YOU (not just to me), and to help you have fun.

I hold degrees from Cornish College of the Arts and University of Washington. I've taught at the university level, taught private lessons for individuals and classes for children and adults for twenty years, and created playfulness-based educational and skill-building programs over Zoom for individuals and households. I can’t wait to meet you.

Online stress relief program training households during pandemic through original Attuned Play method. Designed wellness program, coach training curriculum, and business structure around diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility for marginalized families and to provide jobs for underemployed professionals. Secured 16 key partnerships and recruited three co-founders. Developed original program, method, and theory alongside thought leaders Gwen Gordon and Cas Holman, taking it to proof-of-concept and market testing phase.
