Learn Cello from a Conservatory Trained Musician and Experienced Teacher!

My top priority as a teacher is to equip my students with the tools they need to practice well so that they can achieve their musical goals while feeling fulfilled in the process. As we all know, consistent practice is the only way to make reliable progress, but the quality with which you practice is crucial! Being deliberate about exactly what to improve and how to make the improvement in an efficient manner is key. Another huge priority I have is instilling a great technical foundation in my students. I want them to have an ease and comfort with their technique, so that they can play as many hours as they want and stay injury free! Ultimately, however, I want my students to feel more connected to the music they play, and use their technique in order to express themselves. That's the most gratifying part of music making: finding your own meaning in the music you play.

About Isaac B.

4.9
(26)
I have been playing the cello for almost 15 years, and teaching for 10 years, having recently graduated with my Master's in Cello Performance from the New England Conservatory. I completed my undergraduate studies at the Eastman School of Music, where I received the Glenn L. and Frances Harris Prize for excellence in cello performance. I've had the privilege of studying with some truly great teachers, including Paul Katz, David Ying, Efe Baltacigil and Janice Lee. Over the years my journey has taken me to festivals like Taos School of Music, Bowdoin International Music Festival, Tanglewood Music Center, and New York String Orchestra Seminar, and opportunities to play for Yo-Yo Ma, Darrett Adkins, Antonio Meneses, David Geber, Julia Lichten and Norman Fischer in various masterclasses. I always tailor my lessons to the needs, goals and pace of the individual student, but in general I use the Suzuki Books for beginner/intermediate level students. These books are great with getting acclimated with the basics of the cello, note reading, position changes, and providing a comprehensive repertoire that progresses gradually. If a student would like to work on a piece of their own interest, I'm totally open to that as long as they are at the appropriate level. Practicing the cello is a commitment, but a deeply gratifying one. I look forward to meeting you and helping you achieve your musical goals!

Teacher's studio
Having returned to playing cello after a 30 year hiatus, I had specific issues that I wanted to overcome, specifically extreme tension in both hands. He has been able to provide some excellent exercises and is great about reminding me to continue with the exercises and have patience. His positive nature, helps to keep me positive about the progress I have made. Isaac has a great ability to balance teaching the technical aspects of playing, as well as, musical interpretation and challenges me to view the music from a different perspective. He is truly a joy to have as my teacher.
