Singing

Levels Taught:
Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
Students studying voice with me can expect to gain a thorough understanding of their voice on both an anatomical and a functional level. My method is built upon the vocal training I received as an actor, and on the decade plus of experience I've had since as a singer, musician, music director and actor. It's important for every singer to understand what is really happening with their body when they sing, but that knowledge is only useful if a student is taught how to apply that knowledge in a simple, repeatable way. Each voice is different, just like each body is different, but through a combination of physical and mental vocal exercises, each of my students will learn what proper vocal support means for them. The repertoire of material we then apply this knowledge to is up to the student. I'm happy to teach through whatever genre you're looking to improve in. I also have the ability to make instrumental tracks for my students to practice with, and to make both audio and video recordings, either as a teaching tool or as a demo/audition, etc.

Teaching since:
March 2006

Hello! My name is Ian, and whether you're young, old, a novice or an aspiring professional, I can't wait to work together to help you hone your craft and achieve your creative goals. I've been singing for as long as I can remember, and playing the guitar since I was 11 years old. I studied music and theatre at Salem State University, where I earned a B.A. in performance in 2004, in addition to having studied guitar privately with a number of teachers over the years. For the last decade+ I've mainly been working in the world of theatre as a freelance pit-musician (guitar, bass and mandolin), music director and occasional actor in and around the greater Boston and Providence areas. Additionally, over the past 5 years I've been fortunate to have had the opportunity to work extensively with children and adults with moderate to severe special needs. I first began learning about the subject as a Music Director for children's theatre, then as a one-on-one aid in a specialized classroom for middle school students with severe and profound autism. From there I moved on to a similar but much more intensive position in a private, year-round school designed especially for students whose autism was severe enough to prevent them from attending public school. While working there, I made a connection with the adaptive music program that would come into the school, and now I teach for them during the day, running adaptive music classes for students and adults with autism, as well as adults who have suffered traumatic brain injury.

I love teaching, and I try to make my lessons fun, engaging and personally tailored to help each student achieve their unique goals. I've worked with individuals of all ages, ability levels and walks of life, and I put a real emphasis on developing my students' creativity, not JUST their technique. I love teaching beginners and helping them navigate their way through what can be a very intimidating subject at first, and I also really enjoy the challenge of helping more experienced students as they seek to deepen their ability for self-expression.

Great teacher and nice guy!

I started singing lessons as a complete beginner, although I am in my 30s. Ian was happy to teach me the basics and then we dove right in to something I was interested in learning to sing. He was easy to talk to and encouraging, but willing to point out what I could improve as well. I would recommend him to others.

Awesome teacher!!!

Took a couple singing lessons in the past with a different teacher and I didn't get very far. Ian has a great teaching style and I can already hear a difference in my singing just in the first few weeks of lessons. He is very encouraging, especially for a beginner like me. His constructive criticism is equally helpful. Highly recommended.

Fantastic, Genre Diverse Vocal Teacher

In addition to thoroughly addressing all of the issues that initially spurned my desire for vocal lessons, we also examined and exercised other critical areas that he brought to my attention, and laid a strong foundation for singing technique.

Ian was very friendly--and recepitive to the fact that I was a beginner. I was hesitant to work with Ian because I thought that an instructor with as much as experience and with such a level of expertise would quickly become bored with a beginner such as myself--wasn't the case at all. Ian was friendly, outgoing, and comfortable to work with.

100% Recommended

Ian is an absolutely fantastic teacher. I came to him as a beginning guitarist and in the few short weeks I had with him (I am now abroad) he imbued me with the skill and confidence to not only play from a repertoire of songs but to continue to teach myself.I also did voice work with Ian and he is a great vocal coach. As someone with past experience in classical voice training, I found Ian's method far more effective and to the point than what I had experienced in the past. All in all, Ian is a motivational, inspirational teacher with lots of spirit and just the right balance of constructive criticism and encouragement.

Best. Experience. I've. Had. With. A. Music. Instructor.

My title is simply put and straight to the point. As someone who has had several guitar instructors with little benefit from the lack of connection and individual attention I was originally skeptical starting lessons again. However, within the first lesson with Ian, I felt more of a benefit in my first orientation meeting with him than all my previous lessons with other instructors.Being a teacher in my own profession, I know that individual attention is one of the key components in understanding what support and challenge a student needs to succeed.Ian represents these qualities with his approach. The individual lessons based on my specific area of need, the flexibility with lesson time and the proactive approach to doing extra work just to make sure I am gaining everything I possibly can from the lessons are just a few of the several reasons that I would recommend Ian as a music Instructor to anyone, at any level.
