    About Hovig S.

As a multi-instrumentalist, solo producer, songwriter, and sound manipulator, music has become an essential passion and lifestyle for most of my life. With electric guitar as my main instrument, i have had 11 years of experience crafting my technique, theory, improvisational skills as well as experimenting and manipulating sounds with many guitar effect pedals and digital synth software. My endless curiosity and search for unique sounds has found me playing with many diverse instruments and musicians/ensembles. While jazz guitar is my main focus, i have many other musical interests and high fascination for Latin American, World, Folk, Classic/Modern/Progressive Rock, Electronic, and countless other genres. Education I am a recent UC Riverside graduate with a B.A. in Music with jazz guitar and Latin American music as my focus. in my time at UCR. I've had the chance to experience and study many genres/styles of music from diverse cultures around the world. I have participated and performed with many world music ensembles such as Javanese Gamelan, Mariachi, Rondalla, Indonesian Keroncong and most notably Mayupatapi Andean music ensemble. As a jazz musician i have practiced and performed with the UCR Jazz Ensemble as well as the Jazz Guitar Ensemble and have collaborated and played with many jazz musicians. I have studied Western harmony and music theory and sight singing and have basic piano proficiency. Experience -I have performed and recorded as a lead guitarist for many bands, most notably Alternative Rock/Funk band Pococurante based in Riverside for 3 years and rhythm guitar for Indonesian Keroncong band in Riverside -With the Gluck Arts Fellowship I have been the leader of my own Andean Music Ensemble and performed in various elementary schools and libraries in the Riverside district and lectured on Andean music and culture. -As a solo artist I've begun to pursue a career as a producer and sound manipulator. I have experience with many DAW recording software such as Logic, Pro Tools, Ableton Live and virtual instrument plug ins (VST) by Native Instruments/Waves/Toontrack/ and many more. I produce and record my own music and own recording gear ( Apogee Duet 2 audio interface, Shure SM57 and SM58 dynamic mics, Seinheisser e906 mic, AKG dynamic vocal mic, NI Maschine groove box, M-Audio studio monitors, and much more.) Instruments i have played: Electric/Acoustic/Classical Guitar, Piano, Bass Guitar, Drums, Andean Charango Guitar, Bandurria, Siku/Zamponia Panpipes, Kena flute, Marimba, Mandolin, Kalimba, Rondalla guitar, Javanese Gamelan, Cajon, Bombo drums, Midi software instruments (such as Native Instruments Maschine, FM8, Absynth, Massive synth) Influences: Omar Rodriguez Lopez, Frank Zappa, Wes Montgomery, Art Blakey, Miles Davis, John Frusciante, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Charlie Byrd, Charlie Parker, Victor Jara, George Clinton, Violetta Para, Robert Fripp, John Coltrane, Sun Ra, Joe Pass and many, many more. *** Lesson Details *** For beginners the key is to get familiar with the fretboard and notes and chords before easing into any theory. Basic scales and strumming patterns and easy to learn songs are the best way to allow your hands and fingers to get more comfortable playing the guitar. i will also gladly take any student requests of songs or pieces they want to learn. For intermediate players, lessons will focus on more advanced technique for strumming and implementation of scales and modes that are essential to master at. I am flexible to any type of style of playing and any genre. I can teach rock guitar, to jazz and everything in between. I am a very friendly, patient, and reasonable person and am willing to work and help you achieve your goals as a guitarist/musician whether you've never touched a guitar or if you've been playing for a couple of years. I guarantee each hour to be your money's worth and more. You will know so much more about your guitar in as little as one lesson. Please note though that playing guitar is not just about learning an instrument but finding more about yourself and the potential you have as a person. YOU CAN DO ANYTHING! Just takes time and patience which is a cliche but the hard truth. *For beginner/intermediate songwriters/producers* -lessons will touch up on simple DAW recording software such as Garageband or Logic Pro and will provide ample one-on-one tutorial of recording, sequencing, mixing, mastering, arranging, and producing your own music as well as full depth into new software plugins and midi controllers. *** Studio Equipment *** In Studio: For students i have an extra Vox AD30VT guitar amp so you don't have to bring ur own amp and an extra guitar in case you forget yours as well provided music stands and music books in case you forget. Recording Gear: Mics: Shure SM57 and SM58 dynamic mics, Seinheisser e906 mic, AKG dynamic vocal mic Audio Interface: Apogee Duet 2, M-Audio Fat Track and Macbook Pro DAW/Software: Logic Pro 9, Garageband, Ableton Live, selection of NI Komplete 9 software, Waves mixing/mastering plugins, Toontrack Studio Drummer 2.0, Native instruments Maschine groove box, Alesis QX49 midi controller keyboard *** Travel Equipment *** I have an extra electric guitar amp or a nylon string acoustic for student if they don't have one to begin with. *** Specialties *** I specialize in Jazz guitar but due to my music major ensemble participation i am very flexible for genre including world music, jazz, and classical etc. I am more than proficient in teaching finger positions, scales, modes, strumming patterns from beginner to advanced and sight reading. I prefer not to teach guitar tabs because you can learn better and become a better musician through sight reading.
