I hold two degrees in voice performance—a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a master’s degree from Binghamton University, the State University of New York. Currently a tenured instructor teaching Chinese and singing classes at Binghamton University, I am an award-winning teacher and an active singer. I have given solo voice performances in more than 100 concerts across the U.S. and China, including a solo concert at the United Nations Headquarters. I have taught numerous voice students at the university and privately, and some have gone on to win international awards. I teach vocal technique and singing in both English and Chinese. My strength is making complicated singing techniques easy to understand and apply. I teach students how to sing comfortably and naturally in a relatively short period of time. My emphases include the following: how to use breath properly to support voice, how to open the mouth in a correct way when singing, why smiling while singing is important, and how to interpret a song with a true feeling. I aim to help my students reach their potential, fulfill their aspirations, and sing with confidence.

Dear potential students,

I would like to tell you some more about myself. After I received my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in voice performance from prestigious universities, I have been a university professor and a professional singer for three decades. With such experience, I am a veteran in both singing and teaching.

Over the course of my career, I have performed in hundreds of concerts and recitals and have taught numerous students. My students have won national and international awards. In addition, I have also trained thousands of language teachers on how to teach language to their students through song. Singing improves language students’ pronunciation, diction, articulation and expression in no small measure. The vocal techniques teachers have learned also help them speak in an informed and effective way to protect their voice from the toll that heavy teaching can take.

What is my specialty? First, I try to make complicated singing instruction as simple and clear as possible. My own path to learning how to sing was not as smooth as I hoped. I was often confused by concepts. My experience taught me how to teach students in a straightforward and effective way and help them obtain basic vocal skills and sing in a semiprofessional way in a relatively short period.

My second strength lies in teaching song interpretation. The purpose of singing is to express oneself and communicate with others. Singing with good vocal technique that lacks expression would be dull and would fail to win sincere applause from the audience. I am a very expressive singer. How can you express the true meaning of a song and transfer your feeling to the audience? Two key points: be focused and tell your story from your heart.

Thirdly, I am a very encouraging teacher. I often say that everyone can learn singing if s/he can speak. However, learning singing is just like learning any other skill—it takes time and patience. Students should not set expectations too high; instead, “slow and steady wins the race.” Regardless of your purpose for taking voice lessons, I can assure you that you are doing a great thing for yourself because singing will make you feel happy, healthy and alive. I encourage everyone to learn to sing.
