    About Heidi J.

Hey! I'm an artist who loves community, holds true to my intuition, and believe that art is about exploration and discovery! My teaching style is informative but not formulaic: meaning you will discover what you groove with, and I will support you along the way. I believe that the biggest barrier of being an artist is that you have to build your creative confidence and you have to be you, not me... not anyone. You. Abstraction is a way to find a visual language to feelings and ideas that are not easily formed with words or realistic images. On a more personal level, I am a mother of three kids, have my masters degree in arts and cultural leadership (I can share why I chose not to get my MFA in our sessions,) and love to serve my community through nonprofit work, public art, and teaching.

    Experience

    Teaching Artist

    Independent Contractor

I see teaching in the schools as a social practice that keeps me connected to our future generation. I work with K-12 schools, adult education centers, and summer and after school programs. I have been a COMPAS roster artist since 2012. I collaborate with schools, community and unlikely partners to reflect what real life problem solving looks like. Abstraction. A balance of intuitive and intellect. Color and textures lead by gestures. Some subjects are too difficult to articulate in the literal and definitive. I do not do abstraction because of high art ideals, but rather, I do it because it is how I see complexity. Pixels and brush strokes make up something larger, and maybe, more recognizable. I primarily work in long stitch and coptic book binding. I do some reconstructive bookbinding for individuals, but make agreements that that book not be brought to Antiques Roadshow. This is also an option for teaching workshops.
