What do you offer for a beginner?

Assuming a student has never played a piano and is 10 years old or older, lessons will focus on fundamentals of technique and sight reading classically oriented material. I follow piano curriculum developed by John Thompson and Alfred.

For students under 10 years of age without any prior piano training, a preparatory book may be used.

After a minimum 6-12 months of continuous piano lessons (assuming a weekly schedule), music theory will be introduced, along with chord playing.

What do you offer for a non-beginner?

Assuming a student has had a minimum of one year of continuous piano training, depending on the lesson customization, lessons will be based around the Alfred and/or John Thompson curriculum, and music theory and chord playing will be introduced.

Should a student already know chord playing, I will fast forward the lesson to sight reading lead sheet/fake books and learning pop, rock or jazz piano playing styles (left and right hands). I will also teach how to transpose (play in different keys) with approximately 6-9 months of intensive training.

What do you offer for an advance player?

I have taught few classical pianists (with Bachelor's and/or Master's music degree) who intend to learn modern piano playing such as Pop/Rock/Jazz/Blues styles. Throughout my 10+ years of teaching experience, I have developed a guideline and a private curriculum to introduce chord playing effectively, train left hand movement based on a certain style, and how to speak in musician's language. In addition, I will teach students how to learn a certain music feeling (ie a pop song shall sound like a pop song and a jazz song shall sound like a jazz song). Please also see the question about improvisation teaching approach below.

Training to 'get' a certain music feeling is not a hard lesson; however, it is a tricky process and requires specific customization based on the student's skill. I have found various ways such as shifting the metronome counting, creating different beat subdivision for the same song and guiding with simplified written improvisation which can help students to understand different styles of music.

Do you teach music theory?

Yes, I teach music theory as a part of chord playing for which a basic foundation of music theory is required. I used several book resources for music theory; however, I also have a compact fundamental music theory approach (I do not require student to do a lot of paper work, but the teaching is done through a repetitive music theory concept, orally), focusing on how to 'visualize' music theory on the keyboard.

Should a student want to learn Jazz or a more advanced music theory level (ie college level music theory), I will be happy to provide these. Several advanced topics are harmonic function analysis, modes & modal interchange, chord scale, tension theory, reharmonization, and lydian chromatic concept.

About Hadi S.

I have performed over 600 public music performances as a part of a band and/or as a solo keyboardist, at over 50 different venues in Philadelphia, Wilmington, New York City, Baltimore and New Jersey area. I mainly play piano, electric piano and Hammond organ. As member of a band, I have played Funk, New Orleans, Classic Rock, Blues, Jazz and Fusion. As a solo pianist, my playing style is more into Jazz easy listening (swing, bossanova, foxtrot), Pop/Rock Standard, Blues/New Orleans easy listening and ragtime.

I have been playing keys for over 20 years and graduated from Berklee College of Music with a major in Jazz Composition and Music Production & Engineering. I have taught students, teenagers, adult and small children as young as 5 years old. My teaching is focused on stylistic piano playing (chord playing, improvisation, transposition) for students over 10 year old with at least 1 year continuous piano training. I certainly welcome piano training for beginners as early as preparatory level. Digital piano and digital Hammond organ are available at my house for piano tutoring should you choose to come to my location.

My graduate study was in Acoustics. I am an acoustical consultant and also an audio engineer. I teach audio production classes at Temple University. I specialized in room acoustics and electro-acoustics (loudspeaker design). I have a studio at home and open to audio tutoring (recording and mixing) request as well.

I am originally from Indonesia and have already published two books. I can help with Indonesian language tutoring for English native speakers. I have done many seminars/workshops both in English and Indonesian.

I welcome tutoring requests in Music (Piano, Composition/Arranging), Music Theory, Music Production or other Audio/Acoustics related topics.

Piano Lessons
Working with Hadi is a true pleasure. He has an immense amount of knowledge and experience to boot. Hadi is extremely easy to work with and has tons of patience while in the lesson. He has a keen ability to analyze where you are as a player and build a personalized plan to reach your goals. I highly recommend him as a teacher for pursuing jazz piano as well as other contemporary styles.

Mr. Hadi is a very patient and knowledgeable piano teacher. My son definitely enjoys learning piano and music theory with him. I can see that Mr. Hadi keeps a progress chart for each of his students,. My son is just a beginner level student, but he still gets personalized content from Mr. Hadi.

My goal is not to show off my son's piano skill at family gathering, but to encourage him appreciate and enjoy music. Thanks to Mr. Hadi for helping me reaching this goal.

It was my first piano learning lesson, and Hadi is the greatest teacher. As an adult, I thought it will be hard to understand the material but Hadi gave a very good explanation. Quick responses, and absolutely great value for a private lesson. He is so patient. Worth it!!!

Hadi S is an excellent teacher, and an even better player. As a teacher, he's patient, knowledgable, and provides excellent advice that helps you develop your skills. And as a player, he is as good as it gets. He can play just about anything. Best was that he takes the time to speak with you and ask what kind of atmosphere you want to create with music, and then does exactly what was asked.

I have responsibility review of lessons with him.

First, when I contacted with him about lessons,he suggested me interview that there’s no charge but he would want to discuss with me what I would do expect piano lessons for my son for future.
After discussion,I sent my son another day,it was the first lesson.
Surprisingly,he had prepared its already pre-printed lesson flows!
I appreciated it that it means,we guardians don’t need worry about what we could expect lessons, but of course required practice for next time.
Patent could check what happened the lesson was, what would be for next.

Bastin,Alfred,as you know, those textbooks that kids could learn all the notes.
He uses some of them,it would be combined for your child.

If you looking for the best fundamentally for your child,to play piano, not only enjoyable one,I think he’s the best.

I know there are many Japanese families in Bryn Mawr,I would recommend he’s class!

We are moving family,I expect the piano lessons with him would be make my son’s knowledge to play piano more stronger, also beyond countries, even time passed by.

Hadi has been a fantastic instructor for my 15 year old son, who was a complete beginner. Under Hadi's patient guidance and thoughtful plan, he is playing well and really enjoys the lessons. I would highly recommend Hadi to anyone regardless of experience level. He has expert knowledge but can talk to and work with novices to get them playing right away.

Hadi was excellent. I booked Hadi to teach my mom for her birthday. It was always her goal to learn piano. Hadi's teaching methods are custom to each student and his patience and positive attitude creates a perfect learning environment. I would highly recommend.

New Pony

New Pony delivers a soulful, driving, deep-in-the-pocket brand of funk and soul with a a little southern flavor that practically dares audiences not to move. Live, the chemistry between the band members fuses through a kind of musical alchemy into an infectious electricity wherever they play. Fortunately, their new CD, "Make Your Move," captures their live sound in all its funky, fire breathing splendor. The song writing is polished, the musicianship is accomplished and tight, and the rhythm section lays down a groove as wide as a boulevard and as tight as a wire, while the horn section erupts like a flashes of lightening. The Philadelphia City Paper recently said of them, "they groove, they rock, they make you dance and they throw one of the best parties around." Since forming in 2006, New Pony has established themselves as one of the most sought after and entertaining bands on the local and regional scenes. Their schedule takes them to most of the top venues in Philly, as well as all over Bucks, Montgomery, Delaware, Northampton, Berks, and Chester counties. The band also makes regular trips to Baltimore, NYC, Delaware, and the Jersey shore. They've been a featured performer at some of the region's top festivals, and they've opened for a number of national acts including Bonerama, The Budos Band, Big Sam's Funky Nation, Bernie Worrell, Papa Grows Funk, The Main Squeeze, and Robert Randolph and the Family Band.
