My approach to teaching is informed by sound pedagogical training over two post-secondary degrees, and balanced by my affable personality that seeks to draw out the uniqueness of each student’s abilities and interests. I firmly believe that all people are innately musical, that musical training as a form of self-expression promotes overall well-being and self-improvement, and that piano lessons and practicing are an enjoyable journey of self-mastery and self-discovery. I hold two post-secondary degrees in piano performance. Each included rigorous training in performance, pedagogy and repertoire study. In addition, I trained as a Suzuki piano teacher under master instructors who learned directly from Dr. Suzuki and Dr. Kataoka (co-founder of the piano method). Graham Yates is an exceptional piano instructor. He worked with two of our sons (ages 6 and 8) for a little over a year while in Austin. During that time he was able to connect with each of our sons (who have very different personalities and attention spans) and instruct them in a way that engaged, inspired, and challenged them. While he was their instructor they always looked forward to their lessons and practice time at home. In addition to this Graham was always extremely professional, kind, and helpful by providing resources and tips (especially on his blog) so we could support our children by creating meaningful practice time at home. We have had a hard time finding a new instructor for our children since Graham moved because very few people seem to work with the dignity, passion, and professionalism that you will encounter in Graham Yates.

Mr Yates is my favorite teacher for my kids' musical instruction. He is a gifted teacher, skilled pianist, and I understand he also an accompanist. I trust him and like him and recommend him.

Graham taught both my daughter and I for a couple of years. We both learned a lot and had a great time along the way. Graham was super patient with my daughter and challenged her while still making sure she was able to learn at her own pace. I really looked forward to my sessions with Graham because he knows so much about music theory and history, and so he was able to provide fascinating context to whatever piece we were learning. I couldn't recommend Graham more highly to kids or adults who are interested in learning to play piano. It would be a challenge for you to find a teacher who is more patient, capable, and engaged.
