About Gillian K.

Hi, I'm Gill and I love all things cello! I’ve been playing the cello for over 20 years. I recently moved to Colorado from Phoenix, Arizona where I was an active teacher and performer. I have performed throughout Arizona with The Phoenix Symphony, Tucson Symphony Orchestra, Arizona Opera, West Valley Symphony, and Tucson Repertory Orchestra, with whom I toured Japan for a series of concerts in 2015.

As an active member of the American String Teachers Association, I served as a board member and teacher for Cellobration since 2015- an annual day of learning and music making for over a hundred cellists from around Arizona. I also held the title of Assistant Orchestra Director at Red Mountain High School where I taught weekly cello sectionals for their four orchestras. I am currently excited to be expanding my pedagogical experience by completing training in the Suzuki Method.

I have two degrees in Cello Performance, Suzuki certification through book 2 (and in the process of completing more!), and am active with the American String Teachers Association and Suzuki Association of Colorado. I love teaching students of all levels and ages. Former students of mine have gone on to play in youth orchestras, make All-State Orchestra, and major in music. Whether you want to make a career out of music or just want to learn something new and have fun, I will help you work toward your goals.

My teaching emphasizes good technique as a base for creating and expressing musically. Learning an instrument is all about consistency. If you work hard and follow my guidance, lessons should be fulfilling and productive.

As an adult I decided one day to learn to play cello. Step 1: rent cello, step 2: find teacher. Fate smiled upon me and I discovered Gill at Blackstone Studios.

Now, over 3 yrs. later, I'm extremely impressed with Gill's ability to keep me continually progressing in my playing. Of course practicing helps too...go figure.

She always has a tip, technique, or exercise to smooth out problem areas. She understands the needs of an adult student and easily tailors my lessons as needed. I have also witnessed her teach very young students through high school students with equal aplomb.

GIll can teach, and also do. Listening to her play during lessons is inspiring but I've also heard as part of a trio playing music of such complexity my brain cell almost exploded. Very impressive! She is also a very pleasent and kind lady as well.

So if you are an adult looking for a new hobby or school student wanting to be the best cellist they can, I can not recommend Gill highly enough. She has taken me on a wonderful musical journey so far with no end in sight.

Thank you Gill!
