Gfire has been teaching and performing music full-time for over 17 years. Based in Austin, Texas, the "Live Music Capital of the World," she offers voice, piano, songwriting, yoga, folk guitar, and DJ'ing lessons to students from 5-105 and she specializes in sculpting her lessons to the strengths and desires of each individual student. Her students range from beginning to advanced levels, and they sing and play a multitude of musical styles, including classical, pop, rock, r 'n' b, country, folk, singer-songwriter, musical theater, blues and more.
Gfire loves to share her talents with her students. She prides herself on instilling a "sense of mastery" to each of her singing and piano students, no matter on which level they are. The students come away with a real sense of knowing their songs and their instruments inside out and with a real sense of confidence in their musicianship. Plus they have a lot of fun as they make musical progress!
Gfire is also an award-winning singer-songwriter and "Yoga for the Voice" innovator. She has released 4 CDs of all-original music and is currently working on her 5th CD, to be released in 2015.
As a teacher, Gfire works with students of all levels and all areas of interest. In October 2007, Gfire became the only vocal teacher in the Western Hemisphere to gain full certification in the Science of Singing, developed by Ernest G. White of London, England. Her unique voice training program, entitled "Yoga for the Voice," combines this knowledge of the Science of Singing with ancient yoga breathing techniques. This technique allows each voice student to develop a "vocal tune-up" for the voice AND to discover what the natural singing range is and how to use the voice as effectively as possible. With the internet SKYPE technology, Gfire teaches voice students all over the world, from Switzerland to the U.K. to New Zealand to New York.
Her vocal students have sung in touring rock bands, on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry, in successful auditions, in karaoke clubs, in coffee houses and folk clubs, at weddings and for their own enjoyment amongst family and friends. Whatever level of singing training you wish to acquire, she will show you the way to achieve it!
Gfire was also the main voice instructor and one of 3 main piano teachers at the Austin branch of Mars Music (now defunct) for 3 1/2 years. In addition to her vocal study and innovation, she has studied piano with top classical and jazz pianists, studied songwriting with Pat Pattison of Berklee College in Boston, gotten her full yoga teaching certification in 2004 and DJ'd at clubs and parties worldwide. For eight years straight - 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 - she has won the prestigious ASCAPlus Award for professional songwriting.
As a singer-songwriter, Gfire continues to write, record and perform with some of the best musicians and engineers in the world, including engineer Stuart Sullivan (Willie Nelson, Sublime, Meat Puppets, etc.), Hammond organ player Ian McLagen (Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart), cellist John Hagen (Lyle Lovett), fiddle/mandolin player Warren Hood (The Waybacks), bassist George Reiff (Ray Wylie Hubbard) and banjo picker Danny Barnes (Bad Livers, Dave Matthews).
Gfire's original songs have been played on over 200 radio and television stations worldwide. She has toured in over half of the fifty states, plus the U.K. and Canada.
*** Lesson Details ***
NEW - Gfire is now available to teach WORLDWIDE via SKYPE or FaceTime - so you can have a music lesson in the privacy of your own home!!
Voice lessons - I have created a unique and wonderful vocal method, "Yoga for the Voice," which combines ancient yoga breathing exercises with special vocal exercises to give you a "complete vocal tune-up." These techniques are simple, effective and easily-learned by any student of the voice, from about age 5-105. I love to help you learn to apply these wonderful techniques to learning the songs you wish to learn - whether they are pop, r 'n' b, folk, singer-songwriter, rock, country, opera, musical theater, jazz, etc. "Yoga for the Voice" is just as effective for professional speakers, such as teachers, lawyers, clergymen or actors - we just use a range of notes that is smaller than a singer's range, and we focus on using your speaking voice as effectively and efficiently as possible.
In 3-6 months, you will be able to:
1. master the "breath of fire" and "one-minute breath" - the BEST yoga breaths for singers!
2. master the "sinus humming exercises" - identifying where EACH note in your range originates in your own head
3. master the "full-body exercises" - traditional singing exercises on "mah, mee, moh, moo, meh" - so that you can move easily between your chest voice, middle voice, and head voice
4. master 2-10 songs or more, depending on your level and the level of difficulty of each song - being able to sing each song in TUNE, with feeling, and having a blast doing it!!
5. if you wish, you can perform your song(s) at one of my voice and piano recitals - on a REAL Austin stage!!
Piano lessons - I teach a wide range of piano styles at levels from beginner to early advanced, beginning around age 5. Whether you want to learn classical, rock, blues, country, boogie-woogie, or other styles of piano and keyboard playing, I will sculpt your lesson plan so that you have a great foundation in technique AND you learn the styles and songs you wish to play.
In 3-6 months, you will be able to:
1. master the Leschetizky, hand massage, and isometric warm-up exercises - the BEST piano warm-ups!
2. depending on your level, master Hanon exercises 1-12, major and minor scales, major and minor arpeggios
3. for beginners, you will be able to play with BOTH hands on the treble and bass clefs - at the same time!!
4. master the I-IV-V progression in 3-12 keys, depending on your level - so that you can play blues, rock, country, boogie-woogie, and ragtime songs!!
5. master 4-20 songs or more, depending on your level and the level of difficulty of each song (classical songs tend to take more time to master) - being able to play each song with great technique, with feeling, and having a blast doing it!!
6. if you wish, you can perform your song(s) at one of my voice and piano recitals - on a REAL Austin stage!!
Songwriting lessons - I will teach you how to create a great song, in the style you wish to write in. Country songs, pop songs, rock tunes, r'n' b, folk, etc. - all of these genres have "unwritten rules" about how to put together an effective song. We will utilize special songwriting exercises and tools to help you learn to be a wonderful songwriter.
DJ lessons - I teach beat matching, turntable fine-tuning and repertoire selection to help you become the DJ you aspire to be. I own crates and crates of vinyl records and CDs, and I have DJ'd all over the world to enthusiastic crowds, so I can teach you to attain a real joy and skill in the art of turntablism.
Yoga lessons - I am a fully KRI-certified yoga teacher and I can help you develop a valuable yoga routine to help you achieve your health and relaxation goals. We will choose from literally hundreds of exercises and breathing techniques specifically geared to your needs and wants.

In songwriting, I specialize in teaching students methods of developing popular songs - pop, r 'n' b, country, rock, folk, etc.
In DJ'ing, I specialize in basic beatmatching and repertoire selection.

Annie is DONE and went well! We were all so impressed by Eliza’s confidence and grace under pressure (she handled a couple prop mishaps without missing a cue!) and can’t thank you enough for working with her on the Annie songs. She had a mic on so it was a good thing she was already really comfortable with the songs as they didn’t get to practice with the mic until the dress rehearsal right before the show. Only 3 (her, Annie and Tessie) of the 10 orphans on stage were mic-ed, so we could really hear her. The time and money we spent with you was sooooo worth it. Thanks for being such an amazing singing teacher!+ Read More
My daughter is a classical singer and needed help preparing a song for a performance as we couldn't reach our regular teacher - the lesson was bizarre from moment one - she wasn't prepared with the technology for an online lesson so there were dramas with that. Then she seemed very confused with the piano to the point I thought perhaps she didn't know how to play even though I think she does. Lastly, the actual vocal technique seemed lacking or completely odd compared to what we had experienced with anyone before. It was so awful, I actually ended the lesson early and it was just so awkward and painful. I am sure she has helped some people, but I cannot recommend her for either kids, or for anyone who is doing anything vaguely serious. I am a huge fan of takelessons and we have had wonderful experiences before, but this was just a disaster from start to finish.+ Read More
Gfire pushes you, from the beginning, to do things the right way and I like that. She is better than the previous piano teacher I had....
I am not a naturally talented singer, yet she is teaching me what I can do to improve while being encouraging.
Greatly appreciate her insight and for giving me confidence !
Amazing and patient teacher! Really has helped me learn the basics and I'm looking forward to more!
Gfire was very encouraging, even though my voice was barely audible at times.
She had very effective advice for training my voice to go higher ("less effort on high notes"). She incorporated singing to help my speaking voice and overall made me feel like she really cared about my improvement. I will use her again next year, and feel like our phone lessons were quite successful.
Great intro singing class today. I'm looking forward to the next class with Gfire!!!
Gfire was a pleasure to work with. She was interested and attentive and worked hard to learn about my daughter's musical interests and tastes. She supported my daughter's playing and has earned a high recommendation from our family.
Gfire is a teacher for creatives, encouraging exploration and expression while supplying students with effective research-based tools to support realization of potential.
In the course of a few lessons with Gfire, I (with coaching) wrote a song that I felt pretty good about. I've written a few songs before and had learned the basics, but I enjoyed learning her method (which, in a phrase, would have to be "keep going") and I plan to use it to see if it'll help with my productivity. Gfire was always very upbeat and positive without being phony, encouraging without being demanding, so the lessons were always enjoyable. I would recommend her.+ Read More
Gfire was great. I cant wait for next weeks lesson.
I've only had one lesson so far but Gfire is awesome! I'm coming back to piano after many, many years, and she's already pulled some knowledge out of my head that I didn't know was still there. I can't wait till my next lesson.
off to a great start
Great start for my lessons! like GFire's french background.
Very competent instructor! Excited to see what will result after 4 months of lessons!
Our first session went great! Gfire was pleasant and thorough and I'm looking forward to our next lesson.
You can tell she is experienced, and knows what she is doing. She's very willing to work with you at whatever level, and help you achieve your goals
My first lesson was great. I felt she listened to what I wanted to achieve through. Y lessons, offered good practice suggestions, and was effective in communicating.
She's a beyond wonderful instructor who has so much patience and is one of the friendliest people I've ever met! She knows her stuff and I just can't stress enough of what a wonderful person she is! 1,000,000 of 10 would recommend! :D
I really enjoyed her warmups. I definitely recommend her as a teacher!
Gfire rules. I had to stop lessons with her because of personal scheduling issues, but she taught me so much! She is a great vocal trainer and teacher! Great experience. Highly recommend.
I loved taking lessons with Gfire. We worked hard and had fun dgoing so. I wouldn't change a thing.
I just finished my 5th and final lesson and wanted to acknowledge the help that I received in practicing to strengthen my voice. She was very positive and upbeat while working with me. She geared our practice lessons to my particular situation and I appreciate all of the good advice.+ Read More

Gfire is a great teacher! She's good at starting where YOU are. She's encouraging, easy going, and helps you to relax and feel comfortable enough to sing. She's really good at keeping you on course.
In 15 lessons, Gfire helped me accomplish so much! I now sing a song with clearer phrasing and better note accuracy. Overall, my tonal quality and singing ability has improved greatly.
Gfire is just awesome. In only a few lessons I see such a great work with my daughter. She is already learning to find her head voice after three lessons and is getting better already. I am looking forward to greater things they will accomplish together. Gfire I have been looking for someone like you for such a long time. Where have you been hiding? Everyone look no further, you have found your voice teacher.
Also Gfire we will be with you and thank for your patience and kind.
I believe that Gfire do fire herself in the music and do appreciate all the times she took to teach my little girl the piano lesson. I cannot wait for me to see her able to both play and read music. She will, and I will say thanks to Mrs. Gfire. Everything happen for reason in life.+ Read More
Absolutely love this teacher -- you couldn't find a better one! Easy to work with and taught me a lot. I highly recommend her to both beginning and advanced students.
She is wonderful! She helped my teenage son, who had never sung before get a part in the high school musical. She is always prepared, on time, and able to coach the best out of even the shyest of students. She worked tirelessly with my son on improving his voice, knowledge of music and he tryout piece. I would recommend her to anyone who has always wanted to sing but doesn't think he or she can. My son is proof that Gfire can help anyone improve their voice and be confident enough to not only sing in public but get the part.+ Read More
She is fantastic! She is very knowledgeable and does a great job of explaining things. She's also very supportive and fun. I've only taken a few lessons so far, but I feel like I've already learned so much and I can't wait to learn more. I'm not that great with computer stuff, so I was kind of uneasy about using online lessons at first, but it's been much easier than I thought and Gfire has been very helpful and understanding about that aspect, too. I wish I'd discovered this option for lessons a long time ago, and I absolutely recommend Gfire!+ Read More
I had no piano experience prior to starting my lessons with Gfire, except for some sight reading from choir. Now, 2 years in, I feel I am going strong, thanks to her weekly lessons and support. She is patient and identifies areas for more focus. I would recommend Gfire looking for a fun and consistent teacher.+ Read More

GFire Singing Lessons
Gfire is Amazing!
an amazing teacher with quality talent and a teacher of music that goes beyond creative levels and pure soul, to her and her students at heart.
Great fill-in pianist
I needed a fill-in pianist for my band when my regular couldn't make the gig. Gfire pulled off two hours of my original songs, when I gave her a book of charts and only one run-through of my songs. Very professional and competent!
wonderful voice teacher for my teenage son!
I took just a couple of lessons so far with GFire, but I learned more than by myself in years. She had a lot of patience and explained everything very thoroughly, helped with tips, and was generally very helpful. I am taking a break now from my lessons for a few months, but can't wait to get back to my lessons with her once time allows. We did online lessons through Facetime and, even though I was a bit skeptical before i started about having online lessons, it turned out to be a very good experience and it worked very well. All in all, a great experience.
Learning a lot
I had Gfire as a teacher for 8+ lessons, went from knowing absolutely nothing about Piano and playing but now have a understanding of the basics on piano and how its played and can play a song or 2 well. Gfire, has a simple yet affective style of teaching and immediately after the lesson as have it already printed on my brain so it isn't difficult to remember. Thank you Gfire
Powerful and Inspiring teacher
I learned from gfire never to give up, and that no matter how long it takes I can achieve my goals.
Remote Learning that is NOT "Remote!"
My child has been taking piano lessons via "Take Lessons" since September of this year. Living in a small community of under 5,000 people (located in New Brunswick, CANADA), we lost two music teachers over the summer months, due to them moving to larger centers. Our town of Hampton had approx. 60 music students who had to either give up their lessons or commute to larger communities to continue their learning.
We discovered reviews of "TakeLessons.com" and utilizing their database we found a great teaching mentor for our son. GFire was our choice of teacher, based on her profile description and recommendations. Both my son and I have been extremely pleased with the two-way communication, the positive feedback and the gentle/caring mentorship from GFire. My son has continued his music learning which has been a great boon to his overall cognitive learning and his confidence.
Austin, Texas is not so far away from Hampton, New Brunswick CANADA, ...at least it doesn't feel that way with music instructor GFire. :-)
Gfire teaches my kids for 3 years piano. She is sweet and effective. Kids learn the techniques and some classical pieces. We love her.
It's nice to have a teacher that is flexible in musical styles. Makes lessons much more interesting.
Gfire is on fire!
Gfire is an amazing teacher, she really connects with her students, and is able to bring out the best in their abilities and voice. She teaches her students that their voice is their instrument and how to use that instrument. Love her!
Excellent performer and composer
I first met Gfire through a professional women musicians group in Austin. Since then I have been privileged to attend several of her recitals and house concerts. She is an outstanding composer and performer, able to make her own music AND bring new life to classical compositions. I am sure her students find her to be a real gift..
Best Piano Teacher
Gfire is committed to her art (music) so this passion shows when she is teaching her students. She works well with our son (7).
I love the incorporation of yoga into my singing lessons
Austin's Best Vocal Coach
I started taking voice lessons w/Gfire at a time when I was sure I couldn't sing. She didn't care what I'd been told by other teachers, she was willing to take a chance on me. She is patient, fun, and teaches in a way that doesn't intimidate a student. I highly recommend her as a voice coach.
gfire made my wedding!!
She helped me sing to my husband at our wedding. She did an amazing job getting me to that point. She's the best!!!
Suberb Vocal Coaching
GFire is not only an excellent, patient and understanding vocal coach, but a lovely person and a friend now too. She's got great techniques for overcoming vocal and technique weaknesses. Super reliable and wonderful over long-distance as well! Recommended for all vocal styles!
"a great way for families to learn a musical instrument"
Both my son and I want to thank you for your diligence, effort and patience in conducting this online training. It was amazing that we could have lessons in Hampton, New Brunswick Canada from Austin, Texas USA! :-)
For a remote learner, we would like to ensure you and Take Lessons that we highly recommend this method as a great way for families to learn a musical instrument.
Thank You Again for your wonderful lessons and good luck for the future.
She is a fun and great teacher to learn piano
She is very nice and she has been very nice with my flexible schedule. Is great that once in while she organizes events so her students can play. She has help me get back with my piano skills and she though me the American way for reading music.
The best teacher for finding YOUR voice!
I've sang for bands, choirs, and musicals, but each time, I felt like I was imitating somebody else in order to sound good. gfire's the first to help me feel comfortable with my own pipes AND teach me how singing actually works (FAR easier than I'd thought). Lessons are simple and practical, and gfire's got catchy ways to remember the fundamentals, from breathing to finding notes' "happy places." She's going to be a big star someday, and I'll be proud to say I took lessons from her. For now, I'm proud to say she taught me how to enjoy my voice.
Excellent vocal instructor
Gfire is very helpful and a lot of fun to work with! Definitely recommended.
Gfire is very encouraging and positive. She is a wonderful instructor.
What a unique, wonderful and talented teacher! I'm so pleased with her. :)
I think Gfire is GREAT! My daughter loves her. She is so patient with Ashleigh. I was really reluctant about going online to find a vocal coach for my daughter but it's rare you get this lucky on the 1st try. Thanks Gfire.
My piano teacher
She is a great instructor, really I dont know how easily is for her to play any song. She teaches you with really good techniques which are easy to learn and fun. Even thou she has a lot of thing to do she always puts her attention at 110%.
gfire was very encouraging during my lessons and gave me plenty of exercises to work on at home to make sure I was constantly making progress. I can tell she is very passionate about what she does!
Gfire is great - she knows her stuff and is fun to work with...really enjoying my lessons.
gfire is excellent. Makes it fun and works with my granddaughter and myself to learn songs we want to learn. My granddaughter is very at ease with her.
Awesome and patient instructor
Keniah and I were very happy with g-fire. She is awesome and so verypatient. This is just what I was looking for to enhance Keniah's love ofmusic.
