Conquer Algebra with an empathetic PhD with 20+ years of happy students!

I understand that many people are really anxious when it comes to Algebra, so I strive NEVER to make anyone feel stupid or wrong for asking ANY question. It is true that math can be very unforgiving, but that doesn't mean that teachers have to be the same way. Instead of viewing myself as an expert that must impart his knowledge to others, I like to think of myself as a guide not only that helps people reach their destination but also one who points out interesting things along the way, making their experience both beneficial and enjoyable! And, honestly, math is pretty awesome! It's empowering; and it doesn't have to be hard. I really think everyone can learn math! Over my many years of working with math learners, I have come to appreciate that there are many great ways to think about solving a problem - not just one. So, in a typical session, I ask lots of questions rather than do a lot of lecturing. I feel like questions help me to understand your thinking process and your habits of mind. Since I know which math concepts will be covered in the future, I can help shape your thinking so that you can crush those problems when you get to them. I have found that using the shared whiteboard on Zoom works awesome for doing math problems together, especially if you have a tablet that you can write on too. Since I am on an iPad, it is a little awkward using video, so I typically conduct sessions using audio only. Feel free to use your own textbook - just please send me a few pictures or screenshots of the type of material you would like to cover. And we can use specific problems you select, or I can often make up my own problems. Whether you are afraid of math and need some gentle help or you are already a math nerd and want to get nerdier, I'm happy to be your guide!

    About Dr. Geoff A.

Hello! My name is Dr. Geoff A., and I have been helping students (dare I say) enjoy math for over 20 years. While I may be new to TakeLessons, I am definitely not new to teaching, tutoring, mentoring, and encouraging. About 20 years ago after receiving my PhD in Math, I became a professor and taught just about every math course offered - from Algebra to Statistics to advanced proof courses along with graduate level courses. My students consistently commented on how approachable I was and how I was able to make difficult topics easy to understand and complete. While there I even tutored a gifted elementary school student, helping her master 8th grade math while she was in 3rd grade! After about 10 years, my wife and I wanted to volunteer our time to help with relief work abroad. Unfortunately, this meant I had to give up my position at the university, but the joys were definitely worth it :) While abroad, I began tutoring math online - helping both high school and college students. They too commented on how I made them feel less nervous about math and how I gave them the confidence they needed to ace their exams. I even helped those with special needs to reach their goals. In short, I love math and really enjoy helping people understand it at all levels. I've worked successfully with student of all different backgrounds and comfort levels with amazing results. I hope to work with you next!

I've been taking lessons from Dr. Geoff since 2015 to prepare for actuarial exams. He has helped me tremendously with understanding not only how to work actuarial problems, but also the theory behind the process. Dr. Geoff is very patient and knows how to explain problems in different ways to make sure students have a clear understanding. I would highly recommend Dr. Geoff!

Dr. Geoff is the go to person if you are looking to improve mathematical comprehension. He has mastered not only the complex application of numbers and equations, but the art of teaching material to students in a way that suites each individuals unique needs. I used Dr. Geoff for two years while studying for the preliminary actuarial exams and I successfully passed with great marks. I continue to pass along his information to anyone I encounter that is looking for the extra boost, because his methods are worth every penny spent!! I am so grateful for finding Dr. Geoff and I know others will feel the same
