I have been a musician for my entire life. Started Singing when I was 3, playing Bass Guitar when I was 11, Electric and Acoustic Guitar when I was 13 and recording and producing my own music when I was 17. I received my Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Theory and Composition from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL in 1991. I opened my own Recording Studio in 1997 and have been a professional musician and producer for over 20 years now. I released my first album with my band in 2000. I performed weekly for 500+ people for over 15 years and have produced, recorded or performed on more than 50 commercial music CD releases.

My wide breadth of musical experience has proven invaluable for my students over the years. Being more than just a multi-instrumentalist gives me an exceptionally wide reservoir of knowledge for my students. I have had students stay with me for over 10 years and had multiple students take time away and then return to me as their knowledge and experience increased. My students stay with me because I keep them growing on their instruments and as musicians. Several of my students have gone on to careers in music and have credited me with developing the level of musicianship within them. I find that to be the greatest reward as a teacher.

I would be honored to help guide you on your journey as a musician. Please let me help!

I have always wanted to learn guitar but never had the opportunity, finally when I was 16 I bought my first guitar. I realized how hard guitar was, and almost felt embarrassed to learn. The guitar collected dust for almost 6 years, until September 2014, when I found Gene on Craiglist. I was very nervous as I had never played a day in my life and I was scared I would be terrible.. well I was! but Gene immediately made me feel comfortable with learning a new skill as an adult. He has been so patient through this long learning process and always encourages me to keep going and is good at pointing out my progress when I think I have not made any. Gene is just awesome, he is super caring and understanding. He has become more than just a guitar teacher, he is a friend. Whenever I am having a bad day I love that I can go to guitar, learn some awesome stuff and get out some much needed venting. He's like my guitar therapist! I honestly believe I wasn't meant to learn till I could learn from him! :D he's great and I would recommend him to anyone!!!

I’ve taken guitar lessons with Gene for over 5 years. My guitar experience prior to meeting Gene was very limited. So limited that I didn’t even own a guitar pic nor how to properly hold/use one. I never felt that I needed guitar lessons as I had taught myself many other hobbies in the past. “Practice makes perfect” was a motivational phrase I often told myself. It wasn’t till a failed audition at my local church that I realized my practicing wasn’t producing the results I had wanted/expected. I started working with Gene and immediately identified that a majority of my current abilities were based upon improper techniques.

I didn’t fully appreciate or understand proper technique as its affects were not always apparent in my playing. As my lessons progressed and technique improved, I realized that my motivational slogan wasn’t complete. I now say; “proper practice makes perfect”. Working with Gene got me back on track with learning to play guitar. I have confidence when practicing knowing that the time I’m investing is not being wasted on bad habits.

A lot has changed since starting lessons with Gene. I re-auditioned at church and made the worship team! I regularly played lead guitar at my church and was content with my playing ability. I decided to stop lessons as I now had a solid foundation and figured that I could pick up anything I didn’t know from online videos. This was one of biggest mistakes I’ve made.

Quickly after being on my own, I began to realize the lacking quality and musicianship in the countless “tutorial” videos found on YouTube. It’s easy finding online song lesson, however, it’s very rare to find someone teaching it correctly or true to the album. I remembered working with Gene and not only learning the EXACT riffs and leads to a song, but also the artist’s style, tone and effects used. Over the years I became accustom to learning and sounding just like the artist I was trying to replicate. This quality of instruction I have only been able to find while working with Gene.

I noticed that my interested in playing guitar faded after I ended lessons. I just didn’t have the excitement to learn new songs or challenge myself to play better on the ones I did know. After a long sabbatical I decided to start back up lessons with Gene. Fast forward a few years; I now look forward to practicing nightly and regularly play with multiple churches within the Denver Metro area.

I would not be where I am musically today without Gene’s guidance and inspiration. He’s a great mentor and continues to challenge me to be a better musician. Looking back, if I could change anything about my experience with Gene, it would be starting lessons with him sooner and never taken a break.

I've been taking vocal lessons with Gene once a week for about a couple of months now. I can, without reservation, recommend Gene as a teacher due to the following competencies.
A. Very knowledgeable in the subject matter - Gene has a wealth of experience, clearly knows music theory and has diverse musical background to draw from
B. Can explain musical concepts to beginners in an approachable and easy-to-understand fashion. I have no previous vocal training, and very little formal musical training altogether, and I find Gene's explanations easy to follow to understand.
C. Flexibility - Gene has been very willing to work with me, and remain an effective instructor on, for example, assessing my singing in Russian, a language he does not speak.
D. Results - After 7 classes, I feel Gene has provided me with practical instruction that, when applied, has resulted in improved singing .

I started voice lessons with Gene this past December, knowing nothing about singing, sheet music, keys, anything.
Gene's multi-faceted knowledge of music, his ability to jump from one instrument to the other to explore an example, or a note, his ear for the slightest change in pitch, makes me even more impressed every week as I learn more of the building blocks, and how truly challenging the craft of singing is.
My lessons with Gene have started taking on an organic feel and I get more comfortable with him by the week. Gene is a super nice guy, really funny and engaging and everything thus far has been worth every penny.

Gene Crout is, simply put, an outstanding music instructor and a genuinely pleasant fella. His depth of knowledge on music origins and theory is impressive, and he matches that with enviable skills on his instruments combined with the patience needed for his students to grow their own. I highly recommend Gene to anyone trying to get into the guitar or bass, or trying to up their game to the next level.

Gene knows his stuff and presents it in a really clear way. He understands that playing an instrument is just a hobby for me, and is able to keep the lesson fun while still teaching important fundamentals. I would definitely suggest Gene to any of my friends looking to better themselves at an instrument.

I enjoyed my time with Gene, he gave me a direction in which to move forward on my guitar. I cannot give a complete review after only 2 lessons but he seemed very knowledgeable and had sound reasons for the concepts he was teaching.

Gene is great. I am definitely excited about the lessons to come and my growth through working with him. It is unfortunate that I am not able to work with him outside of Reverb. I am actually stuck with paying more than I should have to because I went through this site, and Gene has the hassle of dealing with a middle man. Nothing but good things to say about Gene though!

Prior to starting my lessons with Gene, I had one year of self-taught experience on acoustic guitar, and could muddle through a few songs, but quickly got frustrated with my learning strategies(or lack thereof), so I decided on formal lessons. Once Gene and I started our lessons, my bad habits were corrected, we narrowed down what type of guitar player I would like to be, and my guitar playing accelerated exponentially. Each week it is a 50/50 commitment between the two of us. There is no lecturing or tests, there is no pass/fail or criticism...only valued participation and exchanging of information.
The other great part of lessons with Gene is his knowledge of music; both formal education and knowledge gained from teaching guitar for as many years as he has. Gene has a library of music material, both popular songs and training exercises that he provides generously. True story: each song we've added to my repertoire, Gene has either pulled a personal copy from his files, or created his own tab by dissecting the song and spending out-of-lesson time making sure it was correct--a true professional. One additional thing I enjoy about lessons with Gene are they are held in his own studio. It's impossible not to be intrigued or excited about learning music while surrounded with this ambiance.
Playing guitar is now one of my most favorite past times, and without the influence from Gene, I wouldn't be anywhere close to the guitar player I am today. Damian 29, Engineer

Whether you are a beginner just starting out, or a veteran player seeking to improve on a particular skill, Gene has something to offer everyone. It has been 6 years since I sat in my last lesson with Gene as one of his students... I am a musician because of Gene, and his impact on my musicianship is lived out every day. I am a youth worship leader at a church in Kansas City, and my job consists of training up high school musicians for the worship team. From understanding music theory, to song dynamic, to tone and playing technique, to being a multi-instrumentalist, Gene is the reason I get to do what I do. He has an incredible wealth of knowledge about music, and on top of that he is an incredibly personable dude. Gene makes music fun, and provides a unique space for everyone who takes lessons with him to grow at their own rate. But the gift in Gene's teaching comes with his ability to teach you how to teach yourself. Again, Gene teaches you how to be a musician, not just how to play an instrument. Like many teachers, Gene can teach any song, theory, technique, etc., but what sets Gene apart is his ability to teach others how to truly listen to music, in order for them to then teach themselves... a skill set greater than any other. I cannot say enough great things about Gene, and I cannot thank him enough for the incredible foundation in music that he set for me when I his student.
