Jiaqi Liu (Gary), is a clarinetist from Guangzhou, China. He started learning the clarinet when he was a child in a high school for the performing arts. To become the best artist/clarinetist possible, Gary realized that he should come to America. His serious studies began when he arrived to the United States. Gary is slightly older than the typical music student because he took two years to restart his high school education and work on his English skills. Mr. Liu went to Walnut Hill High School, near Boston, for three years. During this time, he made huge improvements in his playing and he changed his attitude completely. He began to find himself as a musician and became more extroverted as he engaged in the musical community. He will always be grateful for the opportunity he had, and will never forget the wonderful experiences during this period. Gary received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Boston Conservatory, and Master of Music degree, as well as the Graduate Performance Diploma from the Longy School of Music, where he studied with Jonathan Cohler. Currently, Jiaqi is a doctoral student at The Ohio State University studying with Caroline Hartig. As the First Prize Winner in the 2020 College Students and Professional Musicians Category of the American Protege International Woodwinds & Brass Competition, Jiaqi is invited to perform a recital at Carnegie Hall in December 2021. Recent performances include the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA, Arazo Music Festival in Arazo, Italy, the Zodiac Musical Festival in Nice, France and the Second Clarinet Festival in Beijing, China. Gary served as artistic director of a new music festival, “tea party” in Guangzhou, China. Jiaqi Liu’s primary teaching area is clarinet performance. He enjoys teaching the very young as well as older clarinet enthusiasts. He also assisted in coaching chamber music ensembles at the Boston Music Conservatory. Jiaqi believes it really does not matter about how big a performance stage should be. All that matters is that he has a place to play music, even if there is one audience member. He loves playing music on the street in front of people because it brings the audience close to him. He knows it will not be easy to catch his dream, but instead of following everyone else's way, he decided to become a greater musician.
