Hello! I'm Gary L, I teach in person or online out of my recording studio. I will also come to your place if that's more convenient. We can also do online lessons via Skype, Facetime or Google Hangouts. I've been a professional musician and recording engineer since 2004. I love to teach and pass on my knowledge and experience. Watching students progress is one of the most rewarding things for me. I've toured internationally as a singer, guitarist and bassist with my original music and also as a hired sideman. I run a successful studio out of Bushwick Brooklyn called Young Love Studio. My songs and recordings have been on radio, film and TV internationally including NPR, KEXP the BBC etc... They've been featured in commercials by Capital One, National Parks Foundation, Claire's Cosmetics, Avis, Hot Wheels, and TV shows like Amy Schumer, Jerry Seinfeld's Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, Gossip Girl, The Good Guys, Flipping Out, Teen Mom etc... I have a BA in Audio and Film Production from SUNY New Paltz. Prior to running my own studio, I worked as an engineer in a few professional recording studios with some amazing talent. I've had the experience of working in the studio with grammy winning producer Nellee Hooper (Bjork, Smashing Pumpkins, No Doubt, Massive Attack). I've recorded Grammy winners Molly and Jay Ungar, bass monster Tony Levin, legendary drummer Steve Holley (Wings, Elton John, Joe Cocker), horn player Tom "Bones" Malone (Blues Brothers, SNL, Letterman Band), played guitar and recorded with The Cribs frontman Ryan Jarman along with a slew of other super talented people above and below the public radar. When it comes to the recording studio, not all engineers are musicians. I am youthful, creative, enthusiastic, positive and fun. I believe in the importance of good gear, but feel that musicians don't need to spend large amounts of money to get a great recording. Of course nice microphones, preamps and compressors help, but I believe that ears, technique and quality gear are most important, in that order. On a personal note, I'm also a stand-up comedian and a musician/songwriter with 5 records released under the band name Setting Sun. All these records were written and recorded by me and I also played most of the instruments besides the strings and horns. I've studied at UCB and The PIT where I took classes on improv and sketch comedy writing. I'm very easy to work with. I like to have a good time, but also take my work seriously.
