Unleash your Full Potential in the Piano with Advice from a Juilliard Pro

I bring to teaching piano an unrivalled Juilliard education, international performing and recording career, and 18 years of experience teaching students of various levels. In teaching, I see myself as my students' partner dedicated to helping them realize their full potential as budding musicians and performers. I am encouraging, enthusiastic, patient, and flexible in teaching adults and children of intermediate and advanced levels. I love finding the right individual approach with each of my students, so that they stay motivated and inspired while growing in their musical understanding and mastery. I strongly believe that a chief tool enabling progress in all aspects of musicianship is focused listening, and see my role as a teacher to guide students in developing power and sensitivity of aural perception through concrete steps and activities. I'm deliberate in selecting and assigning a repertoire that challenges students with appropriate techniques and allows them to develop as pianists and musicians. I continuously strive to combine attention to detail with a wider view, revealing relevance of music theory, history, and literature to specific pieces at hand. Based on my own experience as a student, I am convinced that there is a benefit to studying an instrument with an accomplished and actively-performing musician, and therefore include some demonstration at my lessons. I abide by the principle that I must explain and back up every performance suggestion I give. Always knowing why one is doing things a certain way, is the best route to true competence, self-awareness, and artistry.

About Gabrielius A.

Why settle for piano lessons with a guitarist who also teaches drums and viola? This being NYC, start or continue your piano lessons with an actively performing and recording classical pianist with Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees from the Juilliard School and prizes in top international competitions. As a teacher, I am encouraging, enthusiastic, patient, and flexible in teaching adults and children of intermediate through advanced levels. I love finding the most effective individual approach with each of my students so that I can help them reach their full potential, whether in reaching their goals in understanding and making music, or in preparation for performances/auditions. My teaching experience includes university-level faculty positions at Brooklyn College, CUNY (from 2019) and in my native Lithuania (2011-2016), a teaching fellowship at Juilliard (2002-2004), private lessons since 2000, and extensive master classes in US and abroad. I have built a prolific performance and recording career bridging the cultures of my birth country of Lithuania and my present home of the United States. After winning the second prize at the 2005 International Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna, Austria, I have given solo recitals at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, National Gallery in Washington, D.C., and Weill Recital Hall Carnegie Hall. As a concerto soloist, I have appeared with such ensembles as Vienna Radio Symphony (RSO Wien), Juilliard (New York), and Bilkent Symphony (Turkey) Orchestras as well as with every major orchestra and ensemble in my native Lithuania. My discography contains multiple world première recordings and is issued on well-established international labels – Ondine, Toccata Classics, and Naxos. Born and raised in Vilnius, I am the first Lithuanian to receive a Doctorate of Musical Arts from The Juilliard School, where I’ve also earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree as a full scholarship student of Jerome Lowenthal. I currently accept new intermediate and advanced students ages 8 and up for weekly lessons, and am looking forward to welcoming you in my studio!

Gabrelius took the time to find out about my background before we started working. This not only put me at ease, it also put my current level of playing in a context. He also has the experience and depth of understanding to pinpoint exactly what needs improvement in the piece that I'm working on. If you’re an intermediate pianist and would like to advance in technique and musicianship I would highly recommend Gabrielius

Gabrielius is infinitely patient, highly skilled as a teacher and pianist, and has the rare ability to correct while encouraging improvement. I have had 4 lessons with him so far, and already am playing far better than I could have imagined. I recommend Gabrielius highly to anyone interested in learning to play the piano either for personal pleasure or even performance.
