    About Fred P.

The Number One most primal and crucial element for music is no different than the Number One most essential and crucial element in life in general: the answer is "Time". Just as our lives cannot escape time, what makes really great music is timing! What defines a music teacher from a music performer? Example from a real life experience: I met my wife on the basis that we both were trumpet performers. She had trumpet lessons from the famous trumpeter Bill Adams, but he did not correct her problem she had to play upper register. She told me how she was really discouraged that she never could play upper register on trumpet; so I being a researcher nerd, I went all over school websites and trumpet journals and every where I could to find the answer for which I did and upon which she finally could play upper register actually with ease now that I found the solution. So again, think hard about what makes a Good Teacher from a performer? I am an egalitarian pacifist opera, classical & jazz music lover. My mentor was the late, Karl Haas who taught through the NPR program, "Adventures in Good Music". For a singer mentor, I look to John McCormack, John Denver, Tito Schipa, Giuseppe di Stefano, David Gates from Bread, George Benson, Daryl Hall, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Luciano Pavarotti.

Maestro Fred Phillips is an excellent teacher of all musical knowledge. His level of skill is impressionable because he can teach a child what he has learned through his serious research. What what stood out to me the most is that he has a genuine desire to see each student succeed. He and his wife, Sara are a beautiful teacher duo team! He is the authority in any room and is easily able to create a sense of safety and purpose. That is really important for children to learn well. I want to also thank Maestro Phillips publicly because I felt overwhelmed with the size and weight of my harp and he taught me how to carry it properly, how to store it away correctly and how to transport it safely.

Mr. Phillips was my daughter’s piano teacher. She was young and extremely energetic. He was patient with her even though she could be very difficult when working with him. He was always kind and professional. He is intelligent and clearly loves to teach people of all ages.

We have been taking lessons with Fred Phillips for 4 years now. He is a very attentive teacher and cares for the advancement of his students. He looks for the strengths of his students and builds on them while improving on the other areas. I have loved seeing how much my daughter has grown musically. It has truly been a pleasure having him teach my daughter.

My last performance as a professional singer, was Christmas Business Party accompanied by Sara Chasse on harp. We performed many 18th-19th Century Christmas Carols. We would also perform at Kaiser Riverside and Kaiser Moreno Valley, California to volunteer music therapy. Our first day in ICU was a powerful testimony for the power of music therapy. I had just finished singing a few folk songs when a nurse told me that the man whom we were outside performing had just relaxed enough to fall asleep. Medical staff was afraid for this patient because he had already maxed out his Rx and still wasn't showing good signs. The tears in the nurse's eyes and sentiment in her expressed how important what we were doing. Another heart warming experience happened when we were on pediatric floor. I had just finished singing and a woman, a mother with swollen eyes with tears and most powerful expression of joy I had ever seen. She told me that she remembered us performing when you baby was born and now she returned with her sick baby and before we shared our music she had changed from total worry to hope. She hugged me and thanked me with so much sentiment. Music therapy in hospitals is needed perhaps just as equal as medical professionals and that's not coming from me, but from many nurses and physicians that expressed appreciation for us. Nurses and physicians that had put in long hours felt refreshed and renewed senses in the medical care they shared. Among volunteering at Kaiser hospitals, we also volunteered at Air Force Village West near Air Force Base between Riverside and Moreno Valley. There is no greater experience then sharing music with people. We performed many, very many Weddings, funerals, business parties, and even public town and city music shows.

Part of living as a musician is living by scraping by. I had to repair music instruments of students and for ourselves. I was IBM certified in 1994 to repair computers, this I owe to being able to repair any music instrument. However, I replaced flute pads once and vow never again.
