Singing

Levels Taught:
Beginner, Intermediate
If you made it to adulthood and simply cannot carry a tune or think you just sound bad, I'd love to help! If you are looking for singing lessons for your child, I'd be happy to work with you as long as you create an environment at home where singing is rewarded and encouraged!

Singing is fun! Everyone has their own unique instrument, and not everyone chooses to use it. I'll tell you a secret: I've never met one person in my life that is truly tone deaf. Matching a pitch is a skill, not something you're born with. Let's do it!

*Note that it is very difficult to convey certain subtleties of posture and tone in online lessons, and as a result I recommend finding an instructor who can teach singing lessons in person. If you already have some experience singing and are mostly looking for coaching on songs, I'm comfortable working with you online, but if you're an absolute beginner, I would prefer for you to find a coach in your area who can help you in person.

Hi everyone! I'm a hard-working musician with a background in live performance, songwriting, composition, and home recording. I want to help you perform the music you love, whether you're playing to your family, your webcam, or a 15,000 seat arena. I have been teaching private music lessons since 2007.

I am a graduate of UCSD, where I completed my bachelor's degree in music theory and composition. I have taken years of private lessons, played bass, guitar, and mandolin in local and touring bands, and my music has been featured on at least 7 albums. I want to make your goals accessible, and I want to help you find your sound.

*** Lesson Details ***
I focus on making lessons fun for my students. I emphasize the importance of practicing on your own and building confidence by performing live and/or writing your own songs. I love to help people get better at sounding like themselves.

During lessons from me, you can expect to play, sing, clap your hands, and become completely immersed in the music you love. Whether your goal is to perform in front of an audience, record albums, or just play for fun in your living room, I'll help you make that happen.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music room, seating available, street parking.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I only teach students who provide their own instrument. I am willing to provide a loaner guitar for the week if a student's instrument needs to be repaired or is not accessible for any reason. I also provide homework when necessary :)

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching confidence in performance practices, technique, singing and playing, and good microphone habits for singing, speaking, recording, and songwriting. I teach based on student needs, and I find each student benefits from a different curriculum.

Acoustic version of "If Only" from my band Old Man Wizard's 2013 album Unfavorable. I'm in the middle singing and playing the acoustic guitar. Excuse the quality; I'm uploading this one to make it abundantly clear that this is real and performed in one take. Enjoy the imperfections. :)

Great, patient, understanding guy. If you're trying to learn guitar, this is your dude. Knows what he is talking about and is able to clearly and efficiently communicate it. Feels more like hanging out than a "lesson". Do yourself a favor and book a lesson!

Francis is VERY patient and knowledgeable so I feel like I'm definitely getting the most out of the lesson. On lesson #1 I've already learned more about technique than I've been able to pick up on my own over the last (way too) many years.

I’m writing this review after having a few sessions with Francis.

First of all, Francis is an amazing guitar player. If guitar was jiu-jitsu, Francis is definitely a black belt.

Secondly, he's a very kind person and an interesting dude. I’ve enjoyed hanging out in his studio.

And lastly, I feel very confident that Francis is leading me in the right direction. I’m new to guitar but I want to play folk, be well rounded, and have a solid foundation. I can already see that foundation starting to lay itself out. I am very excited to see my progress as I continue to practice.

The sad news is that I have to take a break from guitar lessons for a while for financial reasons. But I wanted to leave review because I feel like others should know about this guy.

A talented musician and caring instructor. My son is on the Autism Spectrum and really related to Francis. Francis encourages his students to lead the way with what they desire out of their lessons. So happy we found him!

my first lesson with Francis was excellent. we talked about goals for a few minutes, then got to work. It was a good vocal warmup and workout. I learned vocal exercises, as well as practicing on a song I wanted to work on. Francis is obviously a pro.

Great first lesson. Helped me understand my range, projection, threw in some theory, and gave me a great base to start my development. Overall nice person and kept the lesson on track, focused, and interesting. Looking forward to more classes.

Francis has been just fantastic as my first ever singing teacher. He completely made me feel at ease, provided me with material to practice in between lessons, and is just a genuinely nice guy to be around. He provided good and intuitive help to improve my singing, and I fell I have improved lightyears in just a few weeks.

Francis is a fantastic instructor. He is very patient and knowledgeable. My friends asked me to play bass guitar in their rock band so I needed to learn fast. Francis taught me the basics and quickly moved on to tips and tricks to help me advance. I am having a blast.
