Hi everyone! I'm a hard-working musician with a background in live performance, songwriting, composition, and home recording. I want to help you perform the music you love, whether you're playing to your family, your webcam, or a 15,000 seat arena. I have been teaching private music lessons since 2007.
I am a graduate of UCSD, where I completed my bachelor's degree in music theory and composition. I have taken years of private lessons, played bass, guitar, and mandolin in local and touring bands, and my music has been featured on at least 7 albums. I want to make your goals accessible, and I want to help you find your sound.
*** Lesson Details ***
I focus on making lessons fun for my students. I emphasize the importance of practicing on your own and building confidence by performing live and/or writing your own songs. I love to help people get better at sounding like themselves.
During lessons from me, you can expect to play, sing, clap your hands, and become completely immersed in the music you love. Whether your goal is to perform in front of an audience, record albums, or just play for fun in your living room, I'll help you make that happen.
*** Studio Equipment ***
Music room, seating available, street parking.
*** Travel Equipment ***
I only teach students who provide their own instrument. I am willing to provide a loaner guitar for the week if a student's instrument needs to be repaired or is not accessible for any reason. I also provide homework when necessary :)
*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching confidence in performance practices, technique, singing and playing, and good microphone habits for singing, speaking, recording, and songwriting. I teach based on student needs, and I find each student benefits from a different curriculum.
The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) is a membership association of more than 480,000 US composers, songwriters, lyricists and music publishers. The ASCAP is committed to nurturing music makers throughout their careers.
Francis is a fantastic teacher. He is patient, extremely knowledgeable, and fun to work with, a rare combination. I joined a friend’s rock band and needed to learn how to play the bass guitar fast. I had never even played guitar before. Francis taught me the basics and got me competent on the songs we were learning. He even helped me with my singing. I now do backup and even lead on a few songs. Francis had a music degree from UCSD and can make learning as simple or as complicated as you want to make it. He also teaches music at an alternative High School. He is very flexible and a very nice person to be around. I highly recommend Francis!+ Read More
Very personable, very talented, and very patient. Great first lesson!
Francis is a great instructor! He is patient and knowledgeable and takes the time to explain things. He is also super laid back and friendly and will customize lessons based on current level. I would definitely recommend him!
An extremely attentive and helpful coach, was able to not only assist me in developing a stronger voice but also a passion for music. Would highly recommend!
Great, patient, understanding guy. If you're trying to learn guitar, this is your dude. Knows what he is talking about and is able to clearly and efficiently communicate it. Feels more like hanging out than a "lesson". Do yourself a favor and book a lesson!+ Read More
Francis is VERY patient and knowledgeable so I feel like I'm definitely getting the most out of the lesson. On lesson #1 I've already learned more about technique than I've been able to pick up on my own over the last (way too) many years.
I’m writing this review after having a few sessions with Francis.
First of all, Francis is an amazing guitar player. If guitar was jiu-jitsu, Francis is definitely a black belt.
Secondly, he's a very kind person and an interesting dude. I’ve enjoyed hanging out in his studio.
And lastly, I feel very confident that Francis is leading me in the right direction. I’m new to guitar but I want to play folk, be well rounded, and have a solid foundation. I can already see that foundation starting to lay itself out. I am very excited to see my progress as I continue to practice.
The sad news is that I have to take a break from guitar lessons for a while for financial reasons. But I wanted to leave review because I feel like others should know about this guy.
Francis is a great instructor. He is very patient and will paint a good picture on the help and support he's teaching. I would definitely recommend him to people I know!
A talented musician and caring instructor. My son is on the Autism Spectrum and really related to Francis. Francis encourages his students to lead the way with what they desire out of their lessons. So happy we found him!
my first lesson with Francis was excellent. we talked about goals for a few minutes, then got to work. It was a good vocal warmup and workout. I learned vocal exercises, as well as practicing on a song I wanted to work on. Francis is obviously a pro.
Great first lesson. Helped me understand my range, projection, threw in some theory, and gave me a great base to start my development. Overall nice person and kept the lesson on track, focused, and interesting. Looking forward to more classes.
Francis has been just fantastic as my first ever singing teacher. He completely made me feel at ease, provided me with material to practice in between lessons, and is just a genuinely nice guy to be around. He provided good and intuitive help to improve my singing, and I fell I have improved lightyears in just a few weeks.+ Read More
