About Felicity G.
I love helping singers - children, amateurs or professionals - find their own, unique voice. Everyone has something special, and it is a joy for me to help you find that.
What kind of music do you want to sing? Pop? Broadway belting? Classical? I can help you with that. Healthy singing is based on giving you a firm technique as a foundation, and once you have that, learning how to tailor your voice to a specific style is incredibly easy.
I am happy to work with children, and I annual prepare several students for NYSSMA - teaching sight-reading in addition to repertoire.
*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are engaging, tailored to each student, and - more importantly - Fun!
Regardless of genre or style, each singer receives a technical foundation, allowing them to keep a healthy instrument, even under stressful conditions.
Generally, each hour long lesson will consist of 25-30 minutes of technical work and warm up, followed by 30 minutes of repertoire coaching.
Coaching is more than just learning notes - it's also about interpretation, understanding the style of the music you're singing, and your physical presentation.
If you need to solely coach or work only on technique, those options are available as well.
*** Specialties ***
I have covered a variety of styles, ranging from classical to Broadway/Pop, for a range of students (avocational to aspiring professional). Additionally, I have experience in using singing and other techniques (originating in speech pathology) to aid teachers (and other individuals) find and maintain an optimal speaking voice, as well as teaching vocal hygiene.
*** About Me ***
I have a Master's degree in Music and Music Education (Vocal Pedagogy) degree from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a Bachelor of Science in Vocal Performance from Tennessee State University.
I've trained extensively in retraining injured voices, and I am currently a Mentee in Mt. Sinai's Eugen Grabscheid Voice Center Vocology Mentorship Program.
I'm an active researcher in the areas of vocal science and pedagogy and I have presented at the Voice Foundation's Annual Symposium on the subject of the treatment of disorders in the singing voice.
In addition to my teaching and research, I have had extensive experience as a performer. My operatic and oratorio performances have included roles from works such as Mozart's Cosi fan tutte, Der Schauspieldirektor, Die Zauberfloete and Le nozze di Figaro; Richard Straussâs Ariadne and Elektra, Verdi's Requiem, Aida and Rigoletto, Wagner's Goetterdaemmerung, Humperdinck's Hansel & Gretel, Obrecht's Missa sine nomine, Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, and, most recently, Haendel's Serse and Alcina.
Since my New York debut in recital at Symphony Space, I've been a frequent performer of concert music. I consider myself a champion of American art music (and new American music, in particular), and as such, I've given the world premieres of music written by a wide variety of composers, including several works written specifically for me.
