Everybody is a drummer! Drum lessons for all ages and skill levels.

Professional teacher since 2008. I started with a snare drum in fourth grade and was forever hooked, going on to play in the prestigious jazz bands at Eckstein Middle School and Roosevelt High School, and graduate from the University of Washington (BM, cum laude, Jazz Studies). Since then I've maintained a professional career as a teacher and player, working with a wide variety of artists and peers locally and nationally, from rock, pop, and folk to jazz, free improvisation, experimental, and beyond. As a teacher, I make sure to work with students on what they are most interested in while also providing them with a strong musical foundation they can apply to any path. I have taught pre-schoolers up to retirees, and have seen my students go on to earn scholarships at internationally acclaimed music universities and become professional touring drummers, as well as many who simply find great joy and fulfillment in making room for music in their lives! My lesson plans depend largely on a student’s specific interests, though of course it is ok if the student doesn't yet know what they would like to study beyond the basics! In any case, I do my best to construct a curriculum that I think will work well for the student, which may include books, other written or printed material including custom exercises developed specifically for the student, listening and viewing material, and more. While I believe that it is very important to learn the fundamentals of drumming, I also believe that some of the most rewarding experiences a student can have may be achieved through realizing their own unique creative potential.

In addition to teaching, I am a member of several active and diverse bands (including Heatwarmer, Abbey Blackwell, and Karl Blau, as well as a wide variety of projects within the local jazz & improvised music scene) that range in style from rock, pop, and folk to jazz, free improvisation, experimental, and beyond. I also work with Seattle-based record label Origin Arts, and I am a co-founder of Table & Chairs, a Seattle-based community organization (formerly record label) rooted in creative, avant-garde, and improvisational music that hosts various events including the Racer Sessions, a regular series and jam session dedicated to exploring composition and improvisation. I have been lucky enough to perform and tour all over the world, playing everything from house shows to esteemed competitions and festivals.

First of all you should know my reason for taking drum lessons. I'm actually trying to learn guitar. On one of the YouTube channels that I've been going to for tips and tricks for guitar the instructor recommended getting a basic knowledge of playing drums would actually help with learning guitar. I had also notices that more than the one YouTube guitar instructor played drums as well. I tend to be a learn what I can on my own type person. So I got the drum related equipment I needed. I got a couple of books and looked up and bookmarked a bunch of YouTube drum lessons. I played around with that for a couple of months on my own and was really enjoying myself but I realized one thing. You can get a lot of information online to teach yourself but you can't get any feedback if you're getting the nuances of the skill building down correctly. I decided that because of the fun I was having I wanted to get more than a basic knowledge of drumming. I also realized that if I didn't get the basics down correctly in the beginning I would probably plateau on my development and learn bad habits that I would probably have to unlearn later. I chose Evan because not only were his reviews good but he was also local to me. I'm not against online lessons but I wanted to be able to be in person to start so I was sure I was getting fully observed and feedback to correct any mistakes in my form. I'm very satisfied with my decision to take classes from Evan. He provides a nice setup for in person instruction 1 on 1. Communicates very well what he's trying to get across to you and takes the time to make sure that you have the bit that your working on down before you move on. That's important if you're trying not to develop bad habits. Essentially he's impressed me enough to do something I wasn't planning on. That is spending more money than I was originally planning on for more lessons from him. You can learn a lot on your own but getting feedback from someone like Evan that really knows what they are doing is invaluable to your drumming development. I highly recommend him.

Evan is one of the best music teachers I've ever had. Not only is he a great teacher but he's a great listener and communicator. His instructions always feel clear and concise which makes the learning process that much easier. One thing I really love about Evan's process as a teacher is his interest in finding out what kind of music you're interested in so that he can cater lessons to the kind of music you want to play. I feel a major sense of comfort getting to work with an instructor who is not only extremely talented but super open-minded and perceptive to whatever your needs might be a as a student. Highly recommend taking lessons with Evan!
