"Every child," Picasso wrote, "is an artist." In this spirit, my goal as a teacher is to help facilitate the manifestation of students' own natural creativity through customized piano education.
First, students and I co-create an artist's statement. Then, with a pencil; a blank, ten-stave manuscript notebook; and a piano, we enthusiastically engage in the process of integrating musical ingredients of students' own choosing—rhythm, melody, harmony, timbre, etc.—into original arrangements and compositions. Between lessons, students generate and notate musical ideas, and, during lessons, students and I work together as "artist" and "artistic director" to transform these ideas into formally sound works. This style is effective, I believe, in cultivating the translatable skills of musical understanding, artistry, and personal ownership.
At the same time, I believe that piano lessons must be about more than just the piano. Thus, in the tradition of my former teacher, Allen Barker, I incorporate insights from related fields, such as visual art and psychology, to enrich lessons in ways that are relevant to students' own interests, aptitudes, aspirations, and gifts.
Mindful that there are many options for piano instruction, please contact me with any questions you may have!
