I am currently a philosophy and political science student at Bard who skipped senior year of high school to go directly into college. When I'm bored I fidget in asl and in my free time, I transcribe some of my favorite songs into ASL. In my time studying ASL, I had a deaf teacher so immersion was the only option. With my class, even the more lackluster of students reached a level of fluency within a year and a half of casual study (not including summers). I believe that this is by far the best way to approach learning sign language because the barrier of entry is smaller than most believe and the progression is far more rapid than any other system I have encountered. Beginner ASL students can expect both targeted practice and immersion lessons. With targeted practice If there is a problem area for you in ASL or there is some upcoming project, I would be more than happy to assist in that specific area and facilitate your jumping over that hurdle. Otherwise, I am most comfortable with immersion lessons. This specifically would entail immersion conversations necessitating growth in your ASL proficiency. This means that I would primarily communicate in sign and, depending on level or proficiency, I may deafen myself to force you to utilize your skills and force growth. Even if you do not believe that you are skilled enough to have me deafen myself in our calls, if you can fingerspell you can communicate with the deaf. Whichever process you need I would love to help you on your journey towards joining this amazing community of ASL users and I look forward to meeting you.
