I offer all my students practical and musical ways to master the tuba that will lead to life long enjoyment. I will equip you with fundamentals for healthy practicing and can offer lessons in several styles, including jazz, classical, and salsa. Additionally, I have helped students prepare for school, district, and regional auditions.

MUSIC LESSONS: Whether I am playing salsa, solo classical piano, in a jazz ensemble, or a concert band, I am ALWAYS having fun doing what I love, and I want you to have the same experience. After moving to Philadelphia ten years ago to study at Temple University, where I received my Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance, I have had many great opportunities to play all types of music with all types of people. While my passions are in jazz music, composing, and arranging, my varied experience helps me pass on the fundamentals necessary to becoming a great musician while also adapting to your goals, needs, and musical preferences.
*** Lesson Details ***
I aim for students to leave each lesson eager to practice and explore, and to come back with questions and stories of their progress. To that end, I work hard to tailor lessons to every individuals interests and goals. Sometimes this means arranging, transcribing a recording, or even composing something new for my students. Additionally, in each lesson, I balance technical skills, ear training, and music theory to assure that each student walks away a complete musician, all structured around your musical goals.
*** Travel Equipment ***
The student must provide their own instrument and assigned method books. I will provide a music stand if necessary, and other useful instructional tools (metronome, tuner, etc.)
*** Home Studio ***
I offer lessons in my home located within walking distance of Broad Street in South Philadelphia, near the Tasker-Morris subway stop. I am equipped with a well-playing upright piano and plenty of space for musical activities. There is ample street parking in the area during the afternoon and early evening, and our living room is available to parents while students take their lesson. Students who travel to me for lessons gain all the benefits of performing on a piano, rather than an electric keyboard, and have access to many more resources that I am able to offer from my home, such as recordings and method books.
*** Specialties ***
I specialize teaching "late starters" (teens and adults new to piano) fundamentals in music in a fun and exciting way that will have you playing the music you love quickly.
For brass instruments, I am able to help brand new beginners build up their sound and facility through simple exercises that will have them astounded by their progress.
MATH: I use my years of classroom teaching and Master's degree in math education as experience to help guide you to the success you are seeking. I am able to tailor sessions to your specific needs with a few key points in mind:
- helping you catch-up, while also preparing you for what is ahead
- balancing practice with conceptual knowledge and application
- using research-based techniques to maximize your learning
I am a patient teacher, and well-equipped to explain tough topics in multiple ways. I like to use visuals and objects with simple examples to help my students really understand a concept before we try harder material. Total understanding and confidence is my goal for you.
My personal interests in mathematics are problem solving, puzzles, and combinatorics (think "How many different outfits can I make with all the clothes in my closet?"). If you're looking for an addicting puzzle to try, I suggest KenKen to all my students.
I started tutoring math in Philadelphia public school with the AmeriCorps program City Year right after finishing my undergraduate degree. Soon teaching math became my second passion, and I worked my way to classroom teaching in 2015. Over the past 7 years I have taught and tutored students from 5th to 12th grade, including Pre-Calculus and Calculus. Currently my primary teaching assignment is 5th grade enrichment classes at Art of Problem Solving Academy.Show More
Every June I head over to Stokes Forest Music Camp in Branchville, NJ to take part in two weeks of music immersion. While I'm there I teach music theory classes, lead a brass ensemble, teach lessons, and have tons of fun. It's a great opportunity to collaborate with other music educators - I always come back with new teaching tools to try with my students. If you are a middle school or early high school student who loves nature and wants to take your playing to the next level, Stokes is the place for you.Show More
Great communication. He has been great at getting my ADHD kid to focus for his sessions.
We (me and my 6 year old daughter) have taken piano lessons for more than 1 year now, and it has been amazing experience for both of us. He is very knowledgeable, patient and enthusiastic music teacher. We had no experience to start with, but now both of us are comfortable with the instrument and the music notes. He is very flexible with his teaching style to accomodate personal preferences and levels.
I would certainly recommend him to anyone who wants to learn piano.
Both me and my daughter have been taking piano lessons from Ethan since last 8 months. He is an amazing teacher and has proved beyond doubt, that he can teach music to a person of any age. He is very adaptable to our specific goals and works alongside, as per our capacity to help us achieve what we intend to. I had no experience with music or piano whatsoever before this and started the lessons to learn a new skill. Over the months, I have not only developed interest in piano but also been able to play with confidence. I had experience with couple of more teachers before we got him, and he is certainly the best. Would highly recommend him.Show More
Amazing teacher!! Has guided this senior to music heights never imagined that I could accomplish. So professional, friendly, caring. Thank you Ethan for instilling the confidence I never knew I had. Continued success, Ethan, in all your endeavors.
Very good with my 5 year old daughter.
very informative first lesson
My boys said," Ethan was awesome at teaching piano!"
My experience as a student (piano) with "Ethan" as my Teacher was extremely warm, friendly, comfortable, and I feel as a middle-aged woman, I will with no doubt become a "piano player". Ethan was "created" to effectively teach anyone - "anything!". This is my first time in 12yrs. interacting with a person via the internet. I am very pleased with "Take Lessons and having "Ethan" a part of their team. I am very pleased! :)Show More
Ethan is a great instructor. He's very patient but also pushes you to try new things quickly if he thinks you can handle it. Challenging but very fun!
Ethan is the best, the absolute best. I am having fun, learning pieces with Ethan's expertise. He makes the lessons so interesting and enjoyable. I am very happy. Ethan is great and so pleased that he is my teacher.
My son is new to keyboard and is loving every lesson. Ethan is a wonderful teacher and our family would highly recommend him to teach in your home as well.
I have had the pleasure of learning piano under Ethan's instruction for the past 9 months. Ethan has been a fantastic instructor so far. I am probably one his older students and as a result my learning speed is probably not in part with his other younger students. Despite this, Ethan has been patient enough to teach me overcome these deficiencies. He is great at teaching very detailed techniques of playing piano and always comes up with little tricks to help me practice. I recommend him to anyone who is interested in learning piano.Show More
Ethan is a top notch trumpet instructor. He has been teaching my 15 yo son for almost a year. He is patient, punctual, prepared and skilled at teaching. He has encouraged my son to improvise, which is very much outside of his comfort zone so this is no small feat. Ethan is able to do this because he connects well with my son, he models playing and plays alongside my son with his trombone, and creates a lesson environment in which his students feel safe to try new things. I appreciate the skills Ethan has as I am a teacher myself, but especially as a parent.Show More
We had a great experience with Ethan. He is quite good with younger children. My daughters are seven year old twins and learned a lot, and Ethan knew how to motivate them.
"Ethan is good with kids like me" - Beatrix, age 7
"I think Ethan understands a lot about kids and he tries to make it interesting. He makes the children happy and excited about what they are going to do. He likes teaching kids so I think I would recommend him to be a teacher of piano because he is nice to me." - Eva, age 7
A top notch educator and performer!
I have had the pleasure of working with Ethan for two years at Stokes Forest Music Camp in northern New Jersey. This program takes place in July for two weeks and consists of talented students from ages 12 to 17. They are involved in many great activities such as orchestra, band, chamber ensembles, rock band, jazz band, and musical theatre. As a fellow teacher here at Stokes (French horn and Music Theory), Ethan and I have joined forces to promote a fun and effective teaching environment for the camp's Brass Ensemble. Ethan was the driving force behind this group, and without his enthusiasm and patience, this ensemble surely would not succeed! His teaching methods kept the students involved, and they definitely had lots of fun last year performing New Orleans jazz (without music!).
I feel that what makes Ethan stand out as a great teacher is that he is creative and connects well with his students. He always maintains a positive outlook and has a wonderful personality! Keep up the good work, Ethan! You will do great things as a music teacher!
