I see my role as a teacher to be like a guide to my students, helping them to navigate their own musical path. I teach key concepts through a variety of strategies and methods so that I can reach each student in his or her strength or interest. This includes class instruction and discussion, small group discussions and projects, and individual projects and reflection. I believe that teaching the fundamentals of music are most important because the basics empower the student to learn. When students have mastered the basics, then they can go on to achieve their personal best. My classroom culture is based on respect and care for one another, which starts with me, the teacher, setting the example and modeling what that looks like for the students.I believe is setting high standards that allow students to be successful, but also leaves room for improvement. I expect each student to do his or her the best. I’m not willing to accept failure, excuses, giving up, or disrespect. Success is the product of applying oneself to learning and growing; therefore, all students can be successful.
