Hey there! I'm excited you dropped by my profile. I'm even more excited that you are thinking about taking music lessons or are planning on giving the gift of music lessons to a loved one. A little bit about me so you can understand how my teaching benefits my students: I went to DePaul University in Chicago,IL and studied Music (voice) and Religious Studies. I have been teaching guitar, voice, banjo, drum and piano lessons professionally for three years, however, I've been teaching on and off again for over ten. Through that time I've taught diverse groups of people, all with different skill levels. No matter where you are on your musical journey or who you are, I can help get you where you want to go!I also have extensive experience as a professionally touring musician. I currently front and manage my band The Northern Skies. If you are looking to start playing with a band, professionally or otherwise, I can help you on that path. Remember: it doesn't matter what skill level you are now! I can help you get there!
*** Lesson Details ***
I believe that every lesson should be fun and comfortable! Depending on the students age and skill level, I pick out books that work for each student, and also ask the student to bring in a piece that they want to work on. Maybe we can learn that new radio hit or the oldie but a goodie that you've been wanting to learn for years! However, learning from books or internet videos alone do not offer the kind of one on one attention students need while learning an instrument. I have the experience needed and a unique curriculum that is based off of understanding the student's musical goals. For beginners, I teach basic techniques and chords through easy songs to get the student playing as soon as possible.Learning music has to be fun! I am a very laid back and believe that learning music involves good communication, having an open mind, and the desire to have fun and LEARN! So I can be very laid back while interacting with students and their families. However, learning to play an instrument takes a lifetime of practice. Even the pros practice every day! Therefore, practice is a vital part of taking lessons and something I take very seriously. I hope you will choose me as your music teacher!
*** Studio Equipment ***
The teacher's home studio lessons are taught in a downstairs home office/music room. The home includes electric guitars, bass, amps, acoustic guitars, classical acoustic guitar, drum set, electric piano and books. Seating is available. Wireless internet is available.
*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide the programming. I expect students to provide their own instrument and to buy the required materials (e.g. book if applicable)
*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching students guitar, voice, and banjo. However, I am able to teach a wide range of instruments because of my education and experience as a professional musician.

Eric took the time to start me off in the right direction!

Great lesson lots of help with tuning up my voice that is out of practice
He's really flexible about time. The lesson themselves are great and gives me time in between lessons to practice. He doesn't just teach me just what he plans, but is open to questions and discussion on music. Recommend!
Really awesome with kids. My daugther is 10 and learning the guitar. Eric is really good explaining the lessons in a way that she can understand. She loves going to practice and she seems to be learning fast. I really recomend him!
Eric has helped me learn to play the ukelele. I was very much a beginner, and he has helped me progress to know several different chords and strum styles. Eric is kind, personable, and willing to help with what you, the student, want to learn.
Eric was an incredibly patient instructor, and really took the time to put detail and thought into his lessons. He has always been very friendly, too. I highly recommend him!
Eric has been an awesome instructor. Very patient with me, an old guy who doesn't get to practice as much as he should be. Eric goes out of his way to find new and interesting things to try. A very good instructor and I recommend him to everyone.
Eric is a great teacher. He is clearly passionate about music. He has been so patient with me and spends as much time as we need when I struggle with some aspect.
He's doing a great job at teaching my son and keeping his attention. We're very happy with his progress so far.
Eric is excellent. Very patient, creative and flexible.
Eric is patient and has many tools on hand to help students learn. I enjoy working with him. He can help you understand what it should feel like when you are breathing, singing, etc in the proper way.
Eric has worked with my 8 year old on drums for almost a year now. He is knowledgeable and patient. I would recommend him to anyone wanting guitar, drum, piano, or voice lessons!
I felt Eric was very patient and knowledgeable, not only about drums, but tempo, music, beat etc. From the right way to hold the sticks, to counting beats and keeping tempo. It is with regret that I have to end our sessions at this time. But I will continue to practice, and can hopefully look to him for more guidance in the future!
Exactly what I was looking for.
Before taking lessons with Eric I had zero formal singing experience and in the 5 lessons I've had with him I've come a long way. My goal going into these lessons was to be able to get parts in musicals, and Eric has helped me a lot in working to achieve that goal. He is always reliable and honest and I know he gives the best lesson he can give every time. In his lessons it is apparent he knows a lot about the subject of music; and, he is able to explain his knowledge in a wide variety of ways - from extremely technical to a little bit philosophical. Eric is a very good singer himself and as a result has been able to personally show me what I'm doing wrong, how to fix it, and what it should sound like when I do.
If you sign up for lessons with Eric you will have: a comfortable, reliable environment to work in, a teacher who will do everything he can to help you improve and will be honest about how far you've come and how far you need to go, and a new appreciation for the depth and beauty of music.
Reliable, Passionate, Wonderful skills, Exceptional Talent
When Eric was a college student, he was employed as a Tutor in various subjects including Music Theory and Intro to Humanities as well as various social studies and history courses. Eric was a wonderful tutor, whose strengths included reliability, passion for helping others be successful, and great teaching skills. He also is exceptionally talented with a wonderful singing voice and can play multiple instruments including guitar and banjo. While I never had the pleasure of being tutored by Eric, as the Coordinator of the tutoring program, I did have the opportunity to hear student feedback. He was very much appreciated by students and definitely made a positive difference in their success.
Best guy in GR!
Eric is truly one of the greatest performers, musicians and teachers Grand Rapids has to offer. A fun-loving guy with a great personality, his attitude is only surpassed by his extraordinary musical talent. Whether it be guitar, bass, vocals or even banjo lessons, make sure Eric is your guy!
