About Emma S.

Emma Schwarz is a classically trained cellist and passionate chamber musician hailing from Boise, Idaho. She is the founder and owner of Suzuki Strings LLC, a company that provides high quality musical instruction to students of all ages. She is cello faculty at the Boulder Valley Waldorf and West Denver Suzuki Strings Schools, at which she teaches private and group lessons. Emma is also cello faculty at the City Strings Organization, a non-profit that operates Suzuki group classes in underserved schools in the Denver Area.

Emma holds a Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance from the Lamont School of Music as a student of internationally acclaimed cellist Matthew Zalkind. She is currently trained through all 10 books of the Suzuki Method, and will complete a Graduate Certificate in Suzuki Pedagogy in June 2020. She has also registered "Suzuki Principles in Action" training with the Suzuki Association of the Americas.

In the fall of 2017, Emma accepted an invitation to study at the Malmö Academy of Music in Malmö, Sweden with professor Samuli Örstromer. While studying in Malmö, Emma produced two concerts with two chamber groups, and performed in two master classes for the world-famous soloist Thorleif Thédeen. While in Malmö, Emma also performed in a folk music ensemble, in which the musicians learned European folk tune arrangements entirely by ear.

Emma is trained as a student of the Alexander Technique, and has taken weekly private lessons for 3 consecutive years. Her training in this method has influenced her playing and teaching of the cello enormously. As a result of her education in the Alexander Technique, Emma has learned concrete strategies to assuage performance anxiety and unlearn harmful mental and physical habits. Emma cultivates relaxed posture and good “use of self” from the very beginning with her students, so that they enjoy ease of motion and playing while avoiding the tendency to develop poor habits.

Emma loves teaching and sharing the transformative qualities of music with her students. Her favorite aspect of music making is the personal growth it engenders not only in musical development but in all aspects of character. Studying an instrument teaches one to constantly search for self-amelioration; Emma cherishes this attitude above all others and seeks to instill it in herself and her students.

Ms Schwarz is a great teacher for my son. She uses Suzuki methods to teach, and is very clear about her expectations for my son in his lessons, and for practicing. He loves his cello lessons.

As a student older than Emma, I was a bit concerned about her ability to teach an adult and our ability to connect. That apprehension went away about half way through the first lesson. Age wasn't an issue at all -- either way. It was a pure student - teacher relationship and I am making great progress under Emma's guidance. I very much enjoy our lessons and I believe I am getting better every week.

My 10 year old daughter has been taking lessons with Emma for almost a year. Emma is very professional, on point, always prepared and never late. She strikes the right balance of encouragement and challenge. I have noticed my daughter's improvement is all areas of academics, discipline, social interactions, patience and self-esteem because of Emma's influence. Emma has a firm hand and demands that my daughter be prepared and ready and willing to learn. She has also established a great personal rapport with my daughter, who looks up to Emma as a role model. I could not recommend her enough for her professionalism, preparedness, and personal investment in my daughter's cello journey.

My 9 year old son has been taking in-person lessons with Emma for over a year, and we feel so blessed to have found her! Emma has such an encouraging, nurturing presence that has fostered a true love for the cello in my son. She makes lessons fun and engaging, and as a result, my son can't wait to practice everyday! His growth in cello technique is noticeable every week, and his confidence and work ethic has improved so much as well. Thank you Emma!
