I harness years of music teaching in diverse settings (including four years' private studio plus four years as a choral director and two years as a music instructor with homeless youth) for a diverse studio meeting real artistic needs. I also am a fluent and experienced Spanish tutor, teacher, and interpreter and offer effective, individualized Spanish tutoring at your convenience. Highlights from my career include: * Professional singing and playing experience in diverse settings (opera stages, pubs, churches, you name it) * Intensive and well-rounded musical training at renowned Brigham Young University in clarinet and voice (earned BM in vocal performance, 2007), including coursework in piano/keyboard, music theory, pedagogy. * Choral music conductor experience (four years volunteer instructor) allows me to offer a broader view of instrumentation, developing your voice/instrument in a group, and establishing a presence in the music community * Mental health, domestic violence, and disabilities direct service work as an advocate, caseworker, support group facilitator, and center director (2007-2012). Broad yet intensive experience in social services enables holistic and effective guidance with the huge array of physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual issues and nuances that affect musical development and performance (bodily tension, working through nerves, motivation, stress relief techniques, goal-setting, life changes and music, disorders support, etc.)... Basically, a life music coach at your beckon call, if that is what you need. *** Lesson Details *** I offer a well-rounded curriculum and dynamic approach to lessons that center around what you, the student, need and want. I am as flexible or as hard-nosed as you need me to be, as I believe musical development depends upon a fluid, mutually response teacher-student relationship. I know and teach curriculum across diverse styles and genres and can adapt and weave in student interests, themes, songs, or life goals into our practice as necessary and appropriate. *** Studio Equipment *** Lessons in private studio room, upright piano, music library, computer, recording equipment, Internet, guitar, amps, various instruments for exploration/play/rhythm/ambiance (including hammer dulcimer, jaw harp, shakers, etc.) *** Travel Equipment *** Keyboard, music stand, recording and playback devices, basic music books, computer. I expect students to be able to purchase some sheet music or books, though I try to provide as many creative solutions if there are financial concerns. It is ideal/helpful if the student or student's family has a computer or media player that they can listen/watch themselves on if possible. *** Specialties *** Contemporary and classical styles Music theory, songwriting and arranging Multiple instruments or singing while playing other instruments World music styles, songs, & instruments

I love learning with Emily. She balances our lessons so well with theory (formal learning) and fun stuff, making each lesson wonderful!

I am a 37 year old woman who played the clarinet over 25 years ago and am therefore a beginner. I really enjoy my lessons with Emily. She balances learning the theory with actually playing music really well and thus each lesson is fun! I would definitely recommend her.

We love Emily! My son is taking singing lessons from Emily in our home, and I'm thrilled with his progress. All I was looking for was a way to build his confidence, but now I have a kid that sings while doing the dishes, explores new music types, and is learning to read music...in less than a couple of months. I love how Emily has adapted each lesson toward what my son is interested in....scales to the Dr. Who or Star Wars themes...who knew? We love Emily and highly recommend her.
